Do you feel like you're making a difference? I found out a former case of mine died on the streets this week during a snowstorm. Days like today it feels like there is no point to anything that I do.

Thank you CM1.

I’m so sorry you got that news. I’ve noticed that the tough cases take up a lot of space and we tend to see on the job when people keep struggling. It’s a lot harder to see the ones who start to improve and thrive because they leave our care. I tend to feel like I’m not making too much of a difference when burnout is high and I’m saturated with really challenging cases where people appear to be making minimal progress.

That definitely has something to do with it. I do have some really positive cases but it's true that I think about them less often because I worry about them less. I just wish I could have done more if there was any more to do. Thank you for these kind words.

I’m so sorry for your loss. It is hard to lose our patients. If it was easy, I’d say you’re in the wrong profession. You were likely more helpful than you realize. Sending positive thoughts, energy, and prayers your way.

Yes, it took me a while at first however I came to the realization I can't help everyone. Not everyone is going to listen to me. I can only try to do my best. And sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It comes with the job, unfortunately. I still am this way that I want to change everyone but I cant. My husband is a big support and will tell me I'm not God and I cant help or change the world.

Aww. I am so sorry to hear that. These are just bad days, not a bad life. You're doing alright.

You can only change people's who want to change.

I was in suicide prevention for 7 years and at the VA for 9 years. I lost many patients over the years. It's hard but people have self determination. They have the right to make their own decisions, even if that decision leads to death. All we can do is try and after that, it's up to them. You do make a difference. You just may not always hear it.

I appreciate any and all responses!

Hello, I’m an LMSW in Michigan. I have 15 years of experience in the field as a clinician, supervisor, and an administrator. I am feeling burnt out and unsure of my future. I graduated in May of 22. I transitioned from being an intern to being a full time counselor, now for 6 months. I feel like I might be catching my agency at a tough time, but as an employee it doesn’t seem to be trying anything to keep me here besides the occasional ‘motivational’ posts from the administrative team. I felt like I was lowballed during my offer, and my negotiation salary was denied since this is technically my first “professional” job. Pt 2 in comments:
