Good Morning, Beautiful People!

I'm currently a Staffing Specialist, very early in my career (9months). My long term goal is to become a Generalist. I feel fairly confident in my role and after much advice from you all, was able to have a conversation with my boss about pushing my SHRM-CP test to next Spring.

My new question is, in your opinion, what facet of the industry should I put focus on next (i.e. pay/compensation, benefits analysis, employee and labor law, etc...)?

Hi there! Goodmorning!

What aspect of this career do you enjoy most? I think reflecting on that question will help guide you in your process!

like

What I enjoy most is helping people. I used to manage our Guest Services department and was blessed with a manager willing to develop me and support my Career goals despite knowing I would eventually move on after I finished my degree. I wasnt sure what I wanted to do, but helping people has always be my driving force. Then, after attending WFF conference, I was inspired to go into HR after hearing too many horror stories of the way people have been treated at work. I figured I could be part of the change by getting into HR where I can advocate for the employees and help shape at least one company's standards.

I know that leans towards Employee Relations, but as my learning is mostly self directed, I just wanted to focus on the most organic next topic.

Understanding of employment laws is a strong foundation for any HR Generalist.

That’s fantastic! Keep up the great work!

If your goal is to become a generalist, experience in any of those sectors is good. Go with whatever opportunity presents itself. Good luck!

like

If you can do a little of all those it will be helpful to be a generalist. Unless your plan is to specialize later. I was also a resource manager and became a HRBP by applying internally.

Is it possible to do a cross of different facets?

Absolutely, but I don't want to try to learn too many new things at once and run the risk of information not sticking. Based on recommendations, I'm going to boost my knowledge of employee and labor laws next. What would you recommend?

It slipped in a meeting today that everyone but me is included in going. More in comments.

Without looking, I was recently offered a role at another company for about 30% more salary and 10x the amount of stock options, but I have only been at my current employer for less than a year and feel really guilty about leaving so soon into my tenure. I'm wondering if I should take the new position, even after less than a year at my company? I can't shake my guilt even though it seems like a no-brainer.
