I can't help thinking that one day you'll look back at your life and realise you spent too much time working. Remember, it's only advertising. No one is going to die if you don't answer your phone out of office hours.
One of my greatest regrets in life is canceling so many plans, or not making them at all, due to this business. People eventually stop inviting you to things, and loneliness sets in. In some ways your friend is right in trying to help you to prioritize more meaningful, lasting relationships and experiences. But I understand that in account you’re on the frontlines and it’s especially hard to pull back. Especially in our current economy.
I appreciate your advice and sharing your experience—and regrets. Any tips on setting those boundaries so I can enjoy life more? I know we're headed into a recession and we're bound to have layoffs, contributing to even more work, but I don't want to cancel plans. And I don't want to be forgotten about because I'm "always working."
My plan isn't to stay in agency forever, but right now, the money is good. Hoping to take advantage for a little bit longer and get out to focus on something I'm more passionate about.
I’m not sure I understand the question. An argument about what?
I feel that it seems my "friend" has a problem with my work ethic. either I work too much, I work too hard, i dont have boundaries? I've come to happy hours late because of work and even showed up with my laptop. I've worked on a trip in a different time zone (where a few days I didn't request PTO) and kept the same hours. Months later, she made a dig at me for working on that trip and not just taking the time off (instead of taking 2 weeks off fully, I took 1 week off, worked 3, called off for another 2 days). I can't remember the other argument, but basically it seemed that she didn't understand that I couldn't say "no" to a client or my boss because there was a deadline or project that needed done. I don't even complain about my job to her.
