I havent had any official 1-1 with my direct manager and i dont have any direct reports. My manager is the CEO. She is a very kind and personable manager. Recently i texted her after hours about career development and she called me immediately and we talked about options for almost an hour.
If you have a good rapport with your manager, I’d suggest sending a calendar invite or sending them a message asking to speak further.
If the rapport isn’t quite there yet, I’d suggest sending a formal email asking for a meeting or career development options.
I schedule a weekly 1:1 for project status updates and a monthly "career development" check-in
Hi!
There’re two things I´d do:
1. Before the next 1:1, I´d send an email to my manager asking to add personal & career development topic on the agenda too. I would then make sure to prepare what specifically I want to discuss about my development.
Or if that doesnt work/isnt an option:
2. I would ask for a separate 1:1 to focus only on my personal & career development topic. Again, I would make sure that I´m very clear on what specifically I want to get out of that meeting.
All the best!
if your manager only wants to talk about business they might not have much on the interpersonal skill level. Find another Sr Manager in the organization that you can have as a sounding board and mentor
I’m a director, manager is sr. Director
I’ve reached out to a few people in the organization but sense there aren’t many inspiring senior leaders who are “into” mentoring.
I have a weekly meeting with my reports and every six weeks a one on one with my manager.
