any telltale signs of layoffs in tiger?
Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

This sounds... Very bad? Did you want to work at a big 4 or get into it for maternity leave/pay? I usually wouldn't ask but it sounds like you're not familiar with accounting or excel, which are huge parts of the job here. Maybe have a frank discussion with a trusted senior so they can refer you to resources where you can gain some skills needed to do your job properly that you should have had before joining? I don't even know, once you throw pregnancy into the mix it's a lot to handle and I don't actually want to recommend a pregnant person working above and beyond during busy season 😅 maybe at minimum check what kind of learner you are (listener, writer, doer, repeater) and ensure you're using the most effective method of learning when taking on new tasks/ projects. Also, you can use one note to organize your tasks and take notes when senior is explaining something to you that are easy to organize and search rather than having paper everywhere or a million word docs. Good luck and your health comes first!
Thanks!!! I wanted to get into big4 primarily. The plan was to make it to senior and then try for pregnancy. It does sound bad. I agree. I guess I thought I would make accounting work bc they say they don’t expect new hires to know much. But it takes me a couple of minutes to just figure out SUMIFS. I have always used excel but formulas and formatting are not my cup of tea. I am utilizing OneNote but I think I am going to start voice recording. It is my first busy season with the team, so I don’t really have a trusted senior as I just met them 4 weeks ago. I may take ur advice and just reach out to the most helpful. I’ve told them that the work paper is confusing, they just say “I know, it’s a very difficult client for 1st year”. But just to reiterate, I did not join for maternity leave. I just see the 11pm nights, my performance, and skills and I just see a baby won’t mix. I just don’t think it’s also the right time to start interviewing. God, forbid something happens, I most likely will wait 1 year and try elsewhere. I’m 33 and I’m okay to admit that I’m just not a great fit.
OK! Based on that, most important first year skills are a can-do/ positive attitude, good social skills and willingness to learn :) they wouldn't fire anyone with those skills. And yes, you're right that a lot of entry levels come in with zero knowledge and it's fine, as long as you have a good attitude and do your best in the first year! If you can build a relationship with a senior and have them help find your strengths and advocate on your behalf, you're golden. Either way if you have a good attitude they don't fire first years (even if not sometimes... Unfortunately)
YouTube is your friend. Whenever I need to learn a formula I use it. Also if something is taking too long, it means there’s a formula or process for that, look it up and watch the video how ever many times it takes. My first year I put in a lot of time outside of work learning software and excel. I feel ya on the pregnancy thing. I was pregnant while studying for the CPA exam. You got this! I promise!
I gave my 1st work paper for review and it was so bad I got taken off the subsequent work paper, someone’s hours freed up conveniently. I take long er than my 1st year peers. I studied accounting years ago, so I remember very little.
I’m also 7 weeks pregnant and verryyy tired on 70 hr weeks and it’s not even crunch time.
How do I make it to 9months and not get fired?
How easy is it to get fired as 1st year at PwC? I just want to make it to maternity leave
