I feel like I have a hard time connecting with clients when it comes to any conversation outside of work. Worried I'm not always leaving the best impression and it's holding me back. How do you find points of connection?

Ugh you really think so? I don't like talking politics with anyone. That is like the worst subject.

Kids, pets, sports teams, travel. But you have to have a genuine interest.

Are you in audit? They secretly hate you because you make them work more.

Small talk is the worst. If all else fails, weather, kids, pets. Don't be too nervous. We all hate it.

What do you enjoy?

I find talking about food and/or local restaurants is a great ice breaker. Everybody eats, right?

You can always LinkedIn or Twitter-stalk people to see what they're into. I sometimes do this with clients.

If you travel, ask about their travel plans;
If you have kids, ask about activities for kids for Summer/Fall;
Everyone can ask what the back-to-office plan at their client’s company is and how they’re adapting to it;
If you have a pet, ask if they have pets or if they’re thinking of getting one;
If you like sports, ask if they or their kids/spouse watches sports on the weekend;
If you read an interesting article (non work related), or saw an interesting news story, mention it.

What is your understanding of the norms around whose names end up on a brief/complaint/motion papers etc.? I’m a midlevel at an AmLaw 20 firm and have twice been the principal drafter of something only to be cut from the signature block. The associate senior to me is on it despite having done far less of the work. And it’s not because it required a rewrite or something. The filed product is 80-90% my work. Am I wrong to be pissed off about this?

What can a junior associate do about a mid-level that constantly asks questions about things they were cc’d on, sends dozens of piecemeal emails and is generally just super high strung and needs everything right away?? Hi all,

I am an IT professional having almost 5 years of experience and want to move to Canada for PR. My CRS score is not upto the cut off. I need someone who can help in earning connections points for Manitoba PNP program.

As it allows having an acquaintance or a friend to earn those 20 points, it can help my PR application.

Anyone who is PR and resident of Manitoba can dm me to discuss around it. I am ready to pay for this assistance as well.

At some Big 4 companies there is a Partner / Principal group that has equity and are part owners of the business and an equivalent Managing Director group that does not have equity and are essentially employees.

How does it work at McKinsey / Bain ? Do those same distinctions exist across partner types, owner vs non owner?
