I find it difficult to understand what my manager is telling me most of the time because he talks really fast without pausing and with a regional accent. What can I do to solve this?

Grab coffee and tell him that you’re an audio-learner, and that you best absorb information by listening - let him know that he can better support you and the team by delivering guidance with more intention and clarity.

On your end, you should follow-up in real time more often. Find opportunities to jump in and pose clarifying questions: “So you’re asking for A, B, and C - did I get that right?”

Send himher an email and say this is what I understood of the ask - please clarify/modify. Why is this so hard?

likeuplifting

If the ask is over your head and you can’t comprehend that’s a different story

OP - what kind of “regional” accent is this?

like

I do have a couple of hypothesis. Regional is usually code for foreign, but given fb moderators are really strict, no one is actually going to say that 😂😂

funny

Tell him that this is going on. He may not care—but he may also not be aware

like

Does he give you *bad* info or do you just have trouble understanding him because he talks fast with a strong accent? If it’s the latter, just ask him to slow down. Are you afraid he’ll be offended or are you afraid you’ll seem stupid?

helpful

He’d probably rather you told him now, vs. having you not understand him! A simple “hey, this might make me sound stupid, but I’m not catching everything and I know what you’re saying is important - can you slow down a little?” I’d also bet you’re not the only person on your team that would appreciate it...

Ok so I don’t have the accent. But I would want someone working for me to speak up if they can’t understand what I am saying - for whatever reason. I would be a lot more ticked off if they didn’t say anything and then didn’t get done what we were discussing ?

Just talk to him...... I’m a fast talker and I’ve had that feedback, it was very helpful.

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?

There are many reasons why people in the working world are not direct when speaking. They are one of the following:

* They pretend they are experts
* They are inexperienced
* They are full of themselves
* They don't know what they are looking for
* They love to talk

Even if these people have good intentions, be careful of them. Your time is valuable, and the best thing for you to do is to be direct back at them.

Wondering if anyone can share the approximate timeline after applying to Target Corp. to hearing something from them. Applied 9/1 and on the applicant portal the status still says “in progress.” I got a great internal referral, but I’ve not reached out to the hiring manager. 😬 I know there were a few hundred applicants — what’s a realistic timeline and what could I say to the hiring manager if I reach out to them. Many thanks.

I had cleared all the rounds in S&P and had salary discussion 1.5 month back. The HR is always saying the management is on leave and will soon get the approval and release offer. Today she shas asked for one more week to release the offer. Should I wait for it or move on. Are they waiting for some other candidate to join before rejecting me at last moment. Only 10 days of my LWD are left.

Hey Bowl,
I work for a late stage(ipo) start up, earlier this year we were acquired & since then they got rid of our yearly bonuses and gave us an ESOP grant.
2 RIFs later we are almost bare bones. Since we are coming up on our usual yearly evaluations many of us assumed (with multiple conversation from our managers) that pay raises and promotions were due.
In a recent All hands we found out that this year there will be no pay raises nor promotions based off merit. Is it time to jump ship?

But my team lead is telling you are not working. Even if I say i have some health issues I may not be able to work like before.She is not listening she has escalated to my manager, my manager is 2X of her even he yells at me.

What to do please help.
