Seems we are in the same situation. I have 6 years of experience in HRIS implementation, integration, administration and analytics with SAP, SuccessFactors and ADP, and every place I apply to wants Workday. I'm looking for a new role for advancement as my company is not forthcoming with a promotion. Would be great to get some advice.
Grrr the frustration! Being skilled in this field we have transferable skills. Learning a new system is the easy part for me. The piece that sets us apart is our ability to understand various aspects of HR, Compliance, etc and integrate our technical aptitude to streamline business processes, integrate other systems, call out best practices, etc...
The two official courses by Workday that are free are "Workday Basics Series" and "Workday in Action Series". These can be found on their website and when clicking on "Enroll Now", it will take you to Coursera. It's better than nothing and at least it shows you're willing to pick up a new system.
Unfortunately, it's up to the management chain to accept experienced managers with no Workday experience and that's a roll of the dice if the job posting says it's optional.
We hired our manager who had zero Workday experience but it was because they were a referral and they had the non-technical skills to adapt to Workday. They are still our manager today so the hire clearly worked out. The general sentiment is that our manager had transferable skills that would allow them to understand Workday, but they weren't responsible for configuration.
