I've been on both sides of layoffs. But the worst day of my career was the one where I had to look people in the eye and tell them they were done. Not because of performance. Because someone three levels up decided the numbers needed to move.
My director at least let me deliver the news personally. I knew these people. I hired some of them. And I had to sit across from them and explain a decision I had zero input on.
I cant imagine those other soulless companies where its just an email or a random meeting some loser from HR. But now I don't trust the company or the executive leadership group.
I was laid off during Covid. I wouldn't say it changed how I interviewed or evaluated companies. It can be so hard to predict that layoffs are going to happen at any given company.
