I’m new to billable hours, I come from a litigation firm where we didn’t have any billing requirements. Now a few months in I’m being called out by my managing partner each month for not meeting the hours.
I set expectations that it will take me time to get the hang of things and I haven’t missed any deadlines reports or appearances. Additionally, my hours have been increasing month over month and last month I was only 5 hours under the minimum. I have only been here for 6 months. What to do?

Depends on why you're not hitting hours.

Struggling to find work? Be proactive about asking for new matters, let the partners in charge know, and take on firm citizenship stuff like pro bono, recruiting, etc.

Have the work but struggling to bull efficiently? Ensure you are staying organized. Make a daily to do list and group work together for the same matter so you don't lose time switching matters. Set goals like 3 hours billed before lunch. And plan ahead - assess where you are halfway through the month and make adjustments, ask for more work, etc to hit your target.

This sounds like insurance defense which is a grind. Also other associates not sticking around is a huge red flag.

For sure bill more hours

Assuming that you are getting enough work to meet hours, it should be a fairly easy fix. You’re close 5 hours over the course of a month is nothing.

What’s your system for capturing your time? The most import thing is to bill as soon as you finish a task, whether that’s writing it down in a centralized place or directly entering it into the system. It’s so easy to miss little things, especially if you’re task switching.

Try and identify your lost time. Can you identify the points where you’re working but don’t know how to bill the time spent? Ask someone in your group pointed questions about how they bill those tasks. And of course, bill the time you spend, not the time you think it should take. Don’t cut your own hours.

All partners have been very understanding and care about the quality of my work, and no client has ever complained. Partners and clients praise my work.

But now, one partner has become super mad and when I explained ADD, he said:

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school
