Tell them in 5 years it’s double and in 8 years it’s triple that.
Went into BIG 4 Financial Advisory from industry as a Manager at 72K. Three years later was promoted and had doubled my salary. Now at around 400K at a large tier 2. Be ambitious, be a high performer, seek out opportunities, and find mentors who believe in your career as much as you do.
They will appreciate your monetary success later in life if/when you support them effortlessly.
Don't let it get you down. Congratulations on a huge achievement! 🥳

With regard to opinion about what is a lot and what is little for comp, this is all very judgmental and opinions differ. There will always be some people who think comp is too low and they will be vocal and complain. There are others in the same situation who view their comp as fair and they are often quiet. I never felt I was underpaid, but that is me. I think it's human nature to always want more. Even though I didn't feel underpaid, I certainly wanted more. Public accounting operates in a free market system. There are hundreds of large employers and thousands and thousands of employees and potential employees. I have to conclude that comp approximates fairness because it is driven by a free market environment. I think if every firm increased comp at every level by 10k for example, then after a year or two some people would continue to complain they are underpaid. I understand people want more, but I cant conclude that people are paid too little.
I realize that my experiences may differ from those of others and maybe in some markets there are issues. I'm speaking overall.
You comment about minimal to no variation in comp levels between high and low performers doesn't resonate with me. In my office, There are wide ranges especially once people get to manager and above. I agree that a socialistic flat comp environment does NOT motivate high performers. If you are truly in such an environment that is unfortunate. I am a believer that high performance needs to be rewarded. I wonder if you are in a group where mediocrity is being rewarded simply because the group is understaffed and everyone is essentially being paid to stay and not for performance. I still believe high performance deserve the rewards.
Congratulations! I am proud of you! You are obviously a hard worker and good student. You will do well.
I am a partner .. been doing this about 30 years . Be so proud of your accomplishments .
It's just your first job. My dad is also a CPA and he also didn't understand. Actually wanted me to counteroffer on my first job @b4 lol...
Your parents are actually right. They’re not saying that to be mean. It’s actually a compliment because they know you’re worth way more than 65k. Do something other than B4 accounting. Terrible career choice in this day and age.
Ridiculous reply to someone that just went through years of accounting education and Cpa prep.
congratulations!
Where are you located? That is a very good starting salary so you are doing well.
Tell the parents that average partner comp in the Big 4 is close to 7 figures and beginning partners make well over 350k. Hopefully those numbers impress them more. If not, ignore them because that response was just terrible of them.
It's definitely just depends on perspective. Once I got my first job I instantly made more than most of my family at 55K so nobody was thinking I got low balled.
Congrats to you!!!
You don’t really need CPA to get a job at B4
A CPA is required to be promoted to manager in audit...
Not sure what city you’re out of or the firm but there are audit seniors (2+ years) in my office that are barely making $65k so consider yourself lucky

You are starting out, CPA or not, that is the starting salary. You have a long career ahead of you.
You got A LOT more than what I did coming out of college. It took me more than 4 years to get to $60K. Don't get discouraged. You will make more $ down the road.
M1, you can keep telling yourself that but no matter which way you twist it you’re getting played
How much did they make in their first job?
Imposter syndrome.
more than career admin make - you have room to grow. they do not.
