Quiet quitting is a BS term made by heads of companies to complain how people aren't working themselves to death for no extra pay. Doing JUST the details of your job description well should be praised, not attacked.
This!!
People need to stop with the labels, especially, but not exclusively, when we don't all agree on what they mean. Even here in your comments, people have eidely different definitions.
You're doing your job. You're getting your work done. You're creating work-life balance without significantly impacting how well you do your work.
That's healthy.
It's not "slacking." It's not "quiet quitting." It's not some other social media-generated meme factory label.
It feels weird because your environment was unhealthy and you were immersed in it so long it felt normal. It's not.
Enjoy your life. You only get one.
The definition of quiet quitting is insane. It's work life balance.
As a dev going above and beyond nonstop is how you burnout. Incidents and customers don't care how long you've been grinding.
Tomorrow always comes so to be ready for it I'm off till then. Incidents can't wait by definition, but that is what I call is for.
What you are doing isn't quiet quitting. The term was for people who quit doing their jobs and waited for the paperwork of bureaucracy to catch up to them. They didn't quit, they just slowed down their work to below what they were being paid for. Post Covid a bunch of media outlets ran with an offhand comment by some rando MBA and it became some derogatory term for people who arent on the MBA bro treadmill. Don't listen to 'influencers'.
You are paid X to do Y. that's it, full stop. Do y, meet your targets, you are good. Don't expect more than the base raise, and don't expect promotion, That's just they way it works.
This is not quiet quitting. Quite quitting is doing absolutely nothing but kind of showing up in person or virtually. Think phone it in
Quiet quitting means stopping your slack notifications at 1pm, not 6pm.
You’re just not putting all your effort into your work anymore, this can happen with anyone with anything. Not just work. To be honest, I thought Quiet Quitting was quitting and not telling your boss which in my opinion is wrong, the least you can do for a company that took you in is let them know before you do. But, thats just me.
Pro
Extremely wild generalizations to follow: Does your boss or your coworkers come to walk your dog, cut your grass, wash your clothes, shop for your groceries, hug the kids and bed your spouse while you are working that extra mile?
Yes there is conditioned belief in suffering, ye struggling and denying oneself to become that titan of industry that Rothschild, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt and even Musk would indeed be envious. But the reality is that those sacrifices today do not attain the returns that they once did and do not detail the actual cost and harm to today's worker. With so many more people on Earth today, the sacrifice is so much more severe and, I would posit, unattainable.
If you are debating whether you are doing enough or not doing enough, then they have already got you where they want you. You are enough, you don't need to be two people. You just need to rise. What will you take with you, when you depart this realm? What will you leave? My father was not a wealthy man when he passed, but he left me rooms of things of which to decipher of his work and existence . Honestly, I'd rather have had the time to spend in conversation and memory making. Please don't miss me when I'm gone.💙☮️
I think "quiet quitting" is actually setting realistic boundaries.
