I've been churning out SOC reports for the past 6 years or so, and have been very bored the last few years. Looking for ideas of where the skill set I've built could be utilized, but also looking for a change of pace/ something more interesting.

So far all my thoughts are SOX, Third Party Risk Management, and Internal Audit. None of which sound particularly appealing.

Thanks in advance!

I went from SOC reports to internal audit for a few years. Internal audit is much more interesting.

Reg tech and risk tech need people who understand the products they sell. Maybe try a role there in product or in CS to branch out

like

Thanks! What do you mean by CS? Customer service, consumer sales, computer science? Other?

SOC 1 reports or SOC 2? I would recommend getting on security assessments, you will find that the skill transfers over. There is a whole world of NIST standards you can get involved with. From there, you can slowly make your way into cybersecurity and information security management. If you go the IA route, I recommend finding an internal audit department that has a strong focus on operational audits.

like

Good mix of both but more SOC 1s. Thanks!

How can you do SOX only for 6 years. My brain is dead after 6 months

like

Lol SOC, not SOX. But yeah also not very exciting

I’m trying to pivot to PM after >3 years in finance and I have a 2nd round interview with CPO this week. Company has 3.7 on Glassdoor with complaints about CEO, “bro-y” culture, and hard to wfh. It’s a data analytics company with 5 PMs, was bought by a PE firm this year, and has a new (female) CEO as of Oct. Role is 50/50 hybrid, pays well vs what I make, and most importantly would be a foot in the door to PM. Is this a good place to be for PM? What else do I need to find out to know for sure?

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.
