I’ve noticed that many LGBTQ+ people make a point of “coming out” to co-workers or clients when initially introducing themselves. I’ve seen many partnered people do this by working in a casual mention of their significant other, which I’ve always thought was so clever and works even in a largely virtual work environment. As a single person though, it’s something I’ve struggled to do. What are other ways that you “come out” to co-workers and/or clients from initial introductions (or later on)?

“Did anyone catch the latest episode of Drag Race?” Just kidding. Kinda. I always found this tricky before I got married. Now it’s easy to say “my husband and I…” Honestly, while maybe playing into stereotypes, I think your best bet is just working queer topics/interests into conversation and letting people connect the dots.

I feel like I’m pretty obviously gay, so this hasn’t really been an issue. But, I think C1 has the right idea with allowing it to organically come up in conversation.

I don't exhibit any particular stereotypical traits so I prefer to wait and see how long it takes for people to find out and it's usually pretty funny when you're like 6 months into a new job and people just start finding out

I have a direct report who is smart, passionate about her job and can be really innovative. However she carries this enormous weight of responsibility, for needing to do everything, do it right, make sure it's perfect, not trusting colleagues to help. It creates dread and panic and overwhelming workload and a terrible attitude for her and I am speaking with her this week to start to shift her mindset. Any tips in navigating how to let go of this heavy idea of "responsibility"?

I’m a new associate working for a well-known defense attorney in my state. On one hand, I’m thankful for the opportunity to learn from one of the best, but he also excoriates and belittles me for my mistakes. Any advice on how much it tolerable? I am here to learn and advance my career but he can be pretty nasty. (My mistakes are no worse than you’d expect a 1st year associate to make, in case you’re all wondering if I’m a major screw-up who deserves it) I leave work feeling a foot tall.

I just asked the partner if he got a haircut because his hair looks nice 🥴 why am i so cringe?? I swear I don’t know how to act around the partners lmao. Does this happen to anyone else or just me?

Just wanted to say, as a guy in my mid-20’s, cheers to all the 30-40+ y/o LGBTQIA+ folks here—I know we roll our eyes at the performative rainbows on everything now, but you folks made this possible for the rest of us—you fought for acceptance, for our rights, and you made it through the struggle so people my age don’t have the same weight to carry, so we don’t have to be as afraid.
We have a long way to go, and I’ll carry the torch too, but I really think y’all deserve more gratitude. Happy 🏳️‍🌈
