One of the summers at my office dresses very unprofessionally, and I was talking about it with my friend/coworker. I didn’t realize that the summer was right behind us. Should I apologize even though I meant everything I said?

Yeah, I don't know how this summer is dressing but unless they are coming in a bikini, I don't really view it as any of your business to talk about. We have a summer who comes in in pretty high-end dresses and tops that show her midriff. I don't think it's a big deal. It's 2023.

I've worn seersucker suits, pink suits, a Hanukkah suit, and a baseball jersey to the office.

Update: if they are in fact wearing sweatpants and Jordans to work, they are unsavable. That's definitely worth a no offer. Geez

You should probably stop discussing these topics with people in your office. Less is more at work

likefunny

I was broke as shit when I summered. Still never wore sweats and sneakers LOL You don’t need a ton of money, or really any money at all to dress decently. No one needs to go buy a whole new wardrobe - I’m sure they could find better than sweats in their existing closet.

Also kinda rude for first assumption to be that slob = poor. I know people rich AF that dress like slobs. Not a money problem, it’s a don’t care or self awareness problem.

Why do you think it is productive to gossip about a summer’s attire in the office to someone else? You probably wouldn’t like it if you overheard two partners bashing your work product behind your back. If you’re actually worried about the issue, just pull the summer aside and speak to them. If you’re not comfortable doing that, speak to the summer’s associate mentor and ask them to do it.

likehelpfulfunny

@A7 and @A9 - that’s exactly my point. In those situations, you hope that feedback eventually gets back to you instead of partners just making fun of you or bashing you behind your back. In this situation, if the summer’s attire is actually inappropriate, I hope that someone speaks to the summer

like

You're right but it was poor judgement to say without checking your sixes. Gossip is a skirmish, clear the area before you put your guard down.

Best approach is to just never mention again

like

Gossiping is no better than inappropriate attire. Give the summer a break and pull them aside and say something. At the end of the day, they want an offer and wearing business attire - in most offices - will impress. Don’t make it about appropriate or in appropriate but more about that dressing to impress is important.

likehelpful

Sounds like you can’t handle the drip.

funnylike

Wtf firms are y’all at where it’s cool to dress in sweats and sneakers on the daily? Not cool to openly talk about it, but damn that’s pretty bold for a summer to be doing lol

like

Yeah, I really want to know what firm lol

This seems like a pretty good situation? Generally speaking, talking to someone under you about their clothes seems like it has the potential to raise HR issues and it’s better for you just not to go there. But this person will probably get no-offered if they don’t stop wearing sweats. So you may have saved them a no-offer with less risk to yourself?

like

It’s definitely a possible HR issue if there is a gender and power element. I assume best practice at most places now is to avoid making comments about what other people are wearing (or how their hair looks, or their makeup, or that it’s obvious they’ve been working out, or whatever) across the board to minimize liability. Of course dress code information can be conveyed by someone at a firm. But question whether it’s good for you to be the one conveying it — it seems like a lot of personal risk and room for misinterpretation with very little personal upside.

like

What kind of outfits are you considering unprofessional?

like

I’ve seen them in person. My comment stands lol

like

Sucks to work at a place where people judge everything about you. That outfit would be fine in my office.

funnylike

@OP, what a summer associate wears should be none of your concern unless it impacts the quality of their work on your matters. What you said is inappropriate not because the summer overhead you but because it's unpolite and unprofessional to gossip about co-workers' clothing (perhaps unless you are complimenting them). We'd all be better off if we all focused less on judging others and more on working on ourselves.

likefunny

You mentioned sweats, hoodies, sneakers. Are they wearing this as one whole outfit or interchangeably?

The one that hits me is wearing sweats to work. Like are we talking about twill joggers that look like sweats?

I’m trying to reason with the summer but this sounds bad.

Gossiping is also bad.

like

Just tell the summer instead of nuking their rep to everyone in the office by gossiping.

You could just tell the guy so he knows not to do it anymore but instead you’re spreading this news around to people who may otherwise not have noticed and will now have a bad impression of him

like

No.

like

Are these really sweats and hoodies or is this a summer wearing lululemon pants and a nice sweater? I agree this would still be on the dressed down side but would be in line with what several associates in my office wear

like

Don’t hate on lululemon. They make dress pants that feel like sweat pants and I wear them every day.

What do you mean unprofessionally? You shouldn’t be talking about people behind their back like that, especially not in the workplace.

like

Do they wear this everyday or just on a Friday? If it was the Friday before Memorial Day, that’s appropriate attire.

likesmart

OP, you should just say something - as long as you can deliver it in a constructive/not asshole way.

Don't apologize. Just move on and pretend it didn't happen. Ideally don't talk about other people where you might be overheard but in this situation it's information that this kid evidently needs, and by apologizing you're both adding complications to an awkward situation and risk telling her it's okay to be this casual.

like

Yes beacsue you should have said it to their face. Make them feel welcome and hit it off in an honest way

like

Why do you care? Let people be uncomfortable. I'm a full associate and will wear jeans/flashy mismatched shoes. You don't need to be in an uncomfortable suit to sit at a computer all day

I’ve been unsustainably swamped for months. Partner said they wanted to add an additional, more senior associate to the team on one massive case that went from “stayed” to “on fire” in the span of a month. I said that sounded awesome and the thought of someone else having to take on some responsibilities was such a relief… so why do I feel competitive and threatened now that the senior associate has actually been added? 🙄
