How to deal with not being staffed on deals and seeing others in your year be staffed? When asking partners directly for work, they refer you to the staffing partners. When asking staffing partners (repeatedly), they say “thanks for interest, we will have something soon.” Weeks and weeks pass by and you’re always below where you should be for billable hours (at this point, very far below). All reviews are essentially perfect and no negative feedback. Extremely frustrating and discouraging.
Laughing in billable hours
I love my firm, but just got an offer to move firms for a bigger chunk of change and lower billable hours requirement. Logically, it makes sense to move, but I’m hesitant. Both firms seem great culture-wise. I am young and succeeding at my current firm. Any thoughts?
Has anyone gone into compliance for a state university & hospital? As counsel or a compliance officer? Looking for insight how this compares to firm lifestyle & billable hours.
I’m just starting up as a freelancer after years of being a full time agency employee. Any big watch outs before finalizing my contract? What about frequency of invoicing and defining billable time? Any guidance on freelancing dos and don’ts is much appreciated.
Do you all count the time you’re spending towards learning a new software (eg. reading help guides, administrator guides, user guides, configuration guides) towards billable time?
This year has been insane. 200+ hours every month. July has been really been slow though. I’m at like 35 billable hours this month. I’m a first year in transactional and staffed on deals that haven’t picked up yet. I’m hesitant to reach out for work because I don’t want to be overwhelmed ... but I also am getting anxiety because I literally have nothing to do all day. Anyone else in this boat?
First year, 5 months in. My supervising attorney said he’d talk to the managing partner about giving me more flexibility on my billable hours 3 weeks ago, so I started to allow some flexibility. (I didn’t ask him to, he decided it was necessary on his own). Yesterday I get yelled at by the partner and my supervising atty tells me that not hitting my hours is the reason he gets screamed at everyday and why they’re forcing me to go into the office now. How do I know what the real expectations are?
SMs-if I email you something you asked me to do as a favor, please have a courtesy to at least reply.Even a single word "Thanks" will work and will not take more than 30s of your highly billable time
How do you get billable work? Are you constantly knocking on doors & hunting it down? Or are assignments generally given to you? Do you ever have periods of being unable to find any?
What careers/practice areas in law do not require billable hours (other than plaintiff’s firms)?
Most billable hours in a day (within 24 hours)? Mine has been 20 and I’ve hit that 2x this year.
How much nonbillable time is too much? I’m a second associate at a midsized firm and I have 30-50 non billable hours each month. An associate at another firm told me this was really high. Thoughts?
If you exceed your billable hours Monday through Thursday and don’t have much work to do on Friday, is it okay to leave early?
2,158 hours contracted a year. Tax season: 55 hour week minimum with 90% billable time. You?
The ebbs and flows of a junior associate (<1yr)... I was approached by my managing parter today about my billable hours. I make an honest effort to bill 40 hours a week and average 37-40 hrs. I learned today that many of these hours are written off by partners and my realized hours are only 30-ish. Now I'm expecting to bill at least 50 hours a week to make up for that deficit. I don't understand why so much time is not realized. Has anyone else had this problem?
I’m a 2017 associate in NYC biglaw. I logged approx. 2300 billable hours in 2019. Is that light, normal or heavy in the biglaw market for RE associates at my level? Thanks in advance for thoughts.
Anyone else completely mail it in after giving their 2 weeks? Major senioritis for me rn. Probably had 2 billable hours today. Maybe
How many billable hours should I be hitting with a motion for summary judgement oral argument prep? I’m an associate starting my second year practicing law. Any advice for oral argument? I am very familiar w/ the facts. But the partner just told me to handle it. It’s pretty much a straight negligence premises liability case. Any insight would help
Media peeps, how real is "apple picking"??
The White House doctor came out a while ago and said Trump uses Soolantra for his rosacea (a condition that causes redness of the face). I understand you don’t like the guy... but I don’t understand how people are ok with making fun of a medical condition.
Is there a skype status for “Don’t talk to me"
Am I too old? Too old to chase a wild dream of living in a beach town? Too old to follow a hunch? Too old to sell everything and start over somewhere else? Some days I feel like I am. With parents in failing health and a grandpa that is lonely most of the time, I feel obligated to stay here. To keep living the life that “makes sense”. I’m 32 single, no kids, own my home, essentially have life by the tail. I live an hour from where I grew up. Feel like I don’t fit in with my friends anymore…
Vacation ideas? Keep in mind I'm poor
Need suggestions: my current investments are FXAIX, VOO, SPAXX and FSEAX distributed among rollover, IRA and brokerage account. What should I consider for 401K?

But I am interviewing with MBB and they only have final round interview slot early next month even after I tell them I have an offer at hand. What should I do? Theoretically I can sign with the boutique and then break it but I don’t want them get me into the visa process. Advice needed please.McKinsey & Company Bain & Company Boston Consulting Group
As a relatively new hire out of a top undergrad school, how long should I wait before applying to MBB if I got rejected after final round interviews last year?
With over 15 yrs marketing, tech and ops consulting in agencies, tech and startups, is it worth even considering roles in MBB or similar? Any advice is welcome. Deciding on staying independent or not
Microsoft 🐟 I’m joining soon and curious to know about the parental leave policy. Are you able to take leave within a year of your start date/is there a waiting period before becoming eligible for the leave? Thanks in advance!
My company has started my green card application (PERM has been submitted) and then I married an American citizen. If I continue the process with my company and receive the green card, is it possible to get citizenship with 3 years under the green card instead of the 5 years required under employment?
If you haven't had your CRT yet because your RP is MIA (which isn't out of the ordinary), should you be concerned about layoffs?
Deloitte 🐠 Could someone give me an idea of comp for a manager salary in system integration practice? Range is fine. Philly region.
Can anyone that interviewed with Grant Thornton comment on typical follow-up times after final interviews? Service line is Advisory/Strategy & Transactions. P.s. Stumbled across this app post application, otherwise would’ve been happy to give someone the referral bonus :)

Got very ill and missed 3 weeks of work (in the hospital) so I missed a lot of follow up calls, appointments, and had no prospecting. How should I explain to people why I missed their appointments?
I am beginning to notice a disturbing trend. When talking to parents I am getting the impression that they think an ADHD diagnosis excuses their child from proper behavior. As if ADHD is a valid excuse to be a jerk. Anyone else experiencing this?
