Need more context:
1) Were they like, secretly recording it on their phone, or was it just the setting in Teams/Zoom? That setting alerts everyone on the call that it’s being recorded, so what’s the big deal. Yes it’s best practice to ask, and you should let junior know that, but unless you’re discussing a huge confidential project, it’s not the end of the world if they didn’t.
2) did the more senior person just respond to junior’s meeting invite and say “I can’t make it, please record” or was it more of a “record this so I can watch it and critique GAS” I’d imagine it was the former, which is a completely normal request that I wouldn’t expect them to go through you for. You seem to think it was something nefarious like the latter though?
Tbh you just sound a little uptight about a simple teachable moment.
They were recording the meeting without notifying the attendees, who were all clients. I only noticed because when they briefly shared their screen to show a timeline, I saw the voice recorder icon in the taskbar . If I noticed, they could have easily noticed.
You talk to that more senior person about your concerns (being out of the loop) and then also discussing the right protocol for future recordings (like telling everyone). That senior person may have reasons for a recording but I wonder why a conference report wouldn’t have sufficed.
A recording is discoverable. There could be liability concerns based on the topic of discussion.
You are definitely right to be concerned. Even if I was asked to do this, I would have mentioned it at the top of the meeting + plus take notes/action items. Also, I have worked with a client and we established which calls get recorded weekly which helps out. But to be safe I typically like to announce as an opener and introduction whether a call will be recorded before hitting the record button.
Just send an email to the full team saying explicit permission is needed from the client before recording and move on
