This job is fucking annoying. Some partners are micromanagers, some are MIA. Many times they flip between the two. Damned if I take initiative, damned if I don’t. We aren’t mind readers.

Worked with an agent on my first deal, great. Second deal now and I’m getting my license myself. I’d like to use her as a backboard for ideas and don’t mind giving her a “finders fee” or something but would like to capture the commissions myself. What would be the normal way to have this convo?

Working for a senior who is beyond horrible. She talks to you like you’re stupid and makes it sound like you’re absolutely terrible at what you’re doing. She’s made 5 other associates cry during her 5 year career. Got someone fired and made another person quit. It’s known around the office that she can no longer have a female associate, because she talks down to females more than she does males. I came along and thought I could deal with it but she literally makes me want to not log on tomorrow.

Should I just quit the legal field?

I have been a paralegal or legal assistant since 2010. I have worked for small and large firms and a TPA. I've worked in L&E, PI, and ID. Billing hours gave me nightmares. Right now I'm in a hybrid paralegal/LA position where I'm responsible for all of the docketing and supporting the managing partner and 1 associate and their 90+ ID caseload. I make a lot of mistakes everywhere I work. I feel so incompetent. Should I just abandon this career path?

What’s the best way to deal with a partner that prefers working solo? For context, this writer I work with conceptualizes by himself, emails the Account team, gives deep input, and makes decisions for us without consulting with me (his “partner”) most of the time. While I appreciate his proactiveness, I feel excluded, limited, and without much room to co-lead the work with him. I don’t know how to bring this up without sounding like I’m b*tching about it.

Any input on job offerings I’ve received. Morgan Stanley CRU risk officer pay is $70k with a less than 10% bonus. And KeyBank position is a private client advisor pay is $67k but bonus can range from $10k -$25k depending on performance and other compensation factors. I don't get it.

So my junior lies a lot. About everything. They work hard and are reasonably smart, but they would swear a black pen is red and vice versa. When you catch them out, they keep digging. I like to think I’m very approachable and would never have an issue with someone not knowing something, needing longer on a deadline, asking questions etc. I’m writing this junior’s review and I’m wondering whether (and, if so, how) to bring this up?

Any other first years out there worry that this virtual environment just won’t be able to teach them? I’m a junior in big law and in the short time I’ve been here, I’ve noticed that counsels produce perfect drafts and yet aren’t partners but partners can’t write two sentences without numerous typos. Shouldn’t counsels be partners and partners counsels instead?

What do people think about Yale Law pulling out of US News rankings? Is YLS on the decline? Having trouble placing their students in New York big law?

To sleep or not to sleep? That is the question... that I’m contemplating right now. At what point is sleep the better choice in the middle of a very busy week? Will I be more productive tomorrow if I call it quits and actually get a full 8 hours tonight?
