Turning 30 in 2 months and full of “I’m not..”s. I’m not as healthy as I wanted to be (on pat leave so snacking a ton) not as successful as I wanted to be (was hoping to be making 6 figs by now) and supporting a newborn on a 95k salary is tough.

I know I have so much thank god. My daughter has met all her grand parents. My wife and I are a real team, I’m healthy and have my hair. I love my community and my two bedroom apt but it’s hard to squash the negative self talk.

Any suggestions ?

Often the life we end up living isn’t the one we ever imagined for ourselves. I’ve learnt to recognise this isn’t a sad thing - it’s a marvel that we have no control over the world on which we are just a little ant on a goldilocks planet, but we can access so much beauty and wonder. I never thought I would just be a regular old parent loving my baby as much as I do. I always planned to be married to my career, but put that on the back burner to spend more time with her.

For me, readings in Taoism have really helped me not get depressed/infuriated about the stuff I can’t control in the world, where capitalism has taught us we should achieve certain things as a reflection of our capabilities and worthiness.

It sounds like you have a great life, and 95k is just 5 short of 3 figures. You are doing really well. And supporting a newborn on any salary is tough, hang in there because these early times are often the hardest!

Therapy. Paying for a few sessions to discuss coping methods for your own intrusive thoughts is worth it, especially so you don’t unconsciously pass bad habits or disordered thinking to your kid.
