US investing from India :

I see finance influencers weighing on the fact that buying index ETFs from the US is not really a good idea. This is because the capital gain tax is very high and as compared to indian mutual funds there's no indexation benefit there in US taxation.

However I see that the expense ratio of Indian MFs is around 0.3% as compared to 0.1% of Vanguard s&p growth index etf.

What would be a better decision here?

Whether u buy indian funds like MON100, mirae mafang or foreign etf directly, doesn’t matter, all foreign investments are treated as debt fund and taxed accordingly, so u can go with indian mf/etf with foreign exposure or directly invest in those etfs.

The only difference is ur conversion charges to usd and reverse, also in new taxations u have to pay 20% TCS for foreign remittance,so that becomes a problem after rbi banned sbm and these vendors have tied up with some US folks

What’s indexation benefit?

Capital gain is calculated by adjusting with inflation. So you pay less tax.

Why not buy Indian MFs which mimicking these index funds? Like ICICI nasdaq100, Motilal Oswal vanguard etf

Right, that was my question. However I see the expense ratio of Indian funds is higher than ETFs in the US. Only Navi funds are cheap.

How's capital gain tax adjusted for inflation? Can you explain please?

Thanks much.

Hi Fishes !
What are your thoughts about investing in reliance power for long term !
I'm a newbie in stocks .
Any suggestion will be appreciated !

I feel like I've been living under a rock for ~5 yrs. I was happy and blowing off money with the thinking that I'll start saving once I start earning more.

Just realised that could've started early. I'm in mid 20s and thinking about investment. Tried watching YouTube videos. But I have pretty basic questions :
1. Where do I even start?
2. What %age of income should I invest?

I hope I'm not late.

Other options I'm considering are SBI life, HDFC life which offices are available in my locality.
