I don't think there is anything stopping you from applying to a local PD now! I know in my local jurisdiction the first step is to simply submit an application. From there you have to pass a multiple choice test and complete a department interview, medical evaluation, and field evaluation. I'm sure your experience with armed security would only help during your interview process. Good luck!!
Getting physically fit enough to pass the physical exams most law enforcement agencies have you do pre-employment. Definite plus if you learn a second language. Get familiar with local/state laws if you aren’t already. Don’t expect to get into the first agency you apply to, sometimes you have to apply 10+ times before you even make it to academy.
No book learning or classroom instruction can truly prepare one for a career in law enforcement - a successful transition into this field often requires dedication to the craft and an unwavering commitment to justice and public service.
Prospective police officers usually undergo specialized training on firearms, driving, and defensive tactics. Depending on the state or locality where the desired policing position is located, other certifications might also be required.
For me, the best way to prepare for a move from armed security to a local police department is to ensure that you have the necessary qualifications and education.
