Does anyone cry b/c of comments or feel like a failure? I work in a small group in big law. A former associate in the group says that 2 partners somehow make you feel that when you mess up, you are a bad person; she joked that she started reading articles for victims in abusive relationships. My group is well known for being the best in a small field but I’m miserable. Im just finishing my first year. I’m one of two juniors and the other is going on maternity leave soon. Is this normal?

2nd year associate here (going into my third). Will have about 114k in student loan debt at the turn of the year. I have roughly 60k in my investment account, 45k in 401k and an adequate balance in my emergency fund. I also contribute to my HSA and will cross the threshold for investing that in January. During 0% on student loans i have been using every spare dine to pay that down. My question is should that continue or should I tone that back and start investing more? Cont’d in comments...

I’m a 5th year associate at an AM200 firm where typical partner track is 7-8 years. The firm is pretty hush re partnership likelihood, but I’ve always gotten good reviews, met hours, and even generated a little business.

That said, I honesty have no idea if I want to be partner. I don’t know what comp looks like, collection expectations, equity buy-in, or benefits looks like.... when is the appropriate time to ask these questions? I’d hate working another 3+ years for something I don’t want.

Midlevel Biglaw associate in DC (Cravath comp, top law school, V20 firm) who just got an offer for a generalist in-house role. The company is a large well-known multinational, but the role is with a new branch of the company for which there’s no salary information online. What’s a reasonable salary/salary range to expect? What about reasonable benefits/vacation/etc.? I have no reference point so any information would be helpful, including any tips for negotiating. Thank you in advance.

Anyone split their maternity leave? How did it go? Any tips?

I’m the lead associate on a trial team going to hearing in June (trial only comes up every 2-3 years in my field). I’m due in December so was looking to do my disability separate from my parental leave (take Dec-Feb off for disability, then again July-Sept for firm-sponsored parental; my husband gets 12 weeks, so we’ll switch off with some parent help). HR was like “technically you can do that but no one does.”

Take the Easy associate job that pays more with great brand name, great pay, great benefits, seemingly good manager, but the role isn’t what you want and isn’t as good of a stepping stone
