McKinsey & Company Already accepted a T2 offer weeks ago but an opportunity to interview with McKinsey fell into my lap, and somehow I got the offer. Really conflicted because the people at the T2 seem great and reneging seems bad but I don’t plan on being in consulting forever, and McKinsey could help set me up for a better future with its reputation. What should I do? McKinsey & Company Kearney Accenture Oliver Wyman Strategy&

McK without a doubt

I was in that situation long time ago, personally I chose OW and best decision I have made. Rationale back then was that I was going to spend quite a lot of time at work and preferred to do it with people I connected/liked better (this is very personal, others would connect better with Mck people). I joined 16 years ago with the idea of doing this for 2 years and still here. If you care a lot about brand then Mck clearly better

Bro are y'all serious? Yesterday someone was asking EYP Strategy vs KPMG Risk and now you with McK vs. T2

These companies need to hire meeeeee!!! 😭😭🤣🤣🤣🤣

Not to be crude but people from my MBA chose to give up sponsorship from OW, S&, and RB to interview for MBB. Some even got the job.

If you think the people in McKinsey aren't nice you clearly haven't done enough networking. Trust me when I say I've worked with some of the nicest, most hilarious, people at McKinsey and think it's great! And that's before the exit ops!

likesmart

I don’t think nicer or less nice, I think more that cultures are very different and that people fit into one vs other one. Assuming most of people at OW (or other places) want to move to Mck is very wrong. I’m sure some will, but I also talk to people who want to move to OW (or others) because they just don’t like their culture. I just feel lots of the answers here are very simplistic

For me this post is a great reflection of what I mentioned on different cultures:
- All Mck people: this is a no brainer, we are the best, and that’s it
- Lots of others: depends on what you are looking for, your fit with people you met, etc

Not everything in life is black or white, nor what works for one person must work for someone else…

7 years to partner was more common in the past when we were smaller, now you still have several people every year that are 7 years but less, I would say average is more 9-10 while in the past 8-9
@FB fair last point, although I’m pretty sure that in relative terms there are more people at OW (and maybe others) that get promoted in 7-8ys vs Mck - not because we are better or smarter but because of the way the firm operates (no up or out/batch progresses together but everyone goes at their own speed).

Also let’s not forget that OW is much younger than Mck (35 vs almost 100 years old), so as a result the entire partnership is younger so you get opps earlier - I’m sure with the years this will erode as we “grow older”

Interview with McK-- you can get a sense for the people at the McK office you're interviews for.

Then you potentially will have more offers and also more insight into each company, which is better than the current state of just a T2 offer with less info of McK and not knowing what to do.

That being said, if you do get the McK offer, I'd take it because my take is that they will have great people too and great work/exit opportunities

Just go to McK. You likely wouldn’t leave McK to go to a T2 so the burned bridge doesn’t matter too much.

I would just be honest with the T2 firm and tell them about the oppty you got!

McKinsey is a large company with a lot of teams - is this an offer for actual strategy/generalist consulting? If not it’s not actually a clear cut decision

like

How do you know I haven’t experienced it firsthand?

If your intro is fully accurate and at the point of accepting your original offer you were doing so fully intending to join, and only later did you get the McKinsey interview chance without actively seeking it once you accepted the other offer, then I think your conscience is clear. Your circumstances changed through no evasion or betrayal of trust on your part.

As others have said, I don’t know that it means you automatically accept McKinsey. You have to weigh all the factors yourself. Lots of people value “brand” over all else, but not everyone. And only you know the right answer for you.

If any of that intro isn’t true — i.e. you accepted while still actively pursuing the McKinsey opportunity — then I do think you need to keep your word to the firm you originally accepted.

I feel like I was straight up lied to during the interview process. “lots of opportunities to hit quota”. I’m sitting here with only one demo two months after joining the company. it looks like our team has only two people doing demos, and demos are only happening once every two weeks. At this rate, I don’t think I’ll be even close to hitting OTE. Are there any other companies hiring right now? I’ll have a discussion about my concerns with my manager soon, but there’s too many red flags here.
