I have bipolar. I have shared that I have the condition with close family but not friends and definitely nobody I work with. I go to therapy so that I don’t feel compelled to burden my family or others with these things. My dad happened to come over unexpectedly when I was in a mixed episode and that was uncomfortable since I was a hot mess. Not sure that this is the best approach, but I have a great therapist and this works for me. Stigma is too big a risk for me to broaden the circle of those I choose to share my struggles with
Yeah I have found unfortunately that it’s not something you can really share with friends, at least not in a detailed or consistent manner because they will drop you as a friend. That doesn’t necessarily mean friends or family are bad people I think some people just don’t understand mental health struggles and how bad they can be sometimes. So they get overwhelmed and feel they need to avoid or distance themselves.
I would definitely suggest sharing with a therapist and maybe family too if there are any open minded/kinder family you have
