In my room, I use REMIND to send texts to parents.
In my middle school, started doing incentive days. We use a modified schedule (kind of a reverse 2-hour delay). Students who are passing all of their classes get to sign up for an activity after lunch (movie, bingo, gym activity, etc..) and those who aren't, go to a workroom. Teachers that aren't supervising an activity are assigned a workroom. We have about 5 teachers per grade working with kids. We do this in the middle of the quarter and at the end. Once kids get word that we are having one, they start handing in their work so they can participate. It works for most, but we still have kids that do nothing or stay home that day.
We have a very active PTA and our parents in general are very involved in their children's academics. Very thankful!
Food, prizes, and put their kids on stage. If you can get them in the school, that is half the battle. Maybe even most.
No and I hate to say that. With Covid and parents working outside the home/trying to navigate that, I think it is a lost cause. I think parents are just doing the best they can right now and I don't think its that they don't care, I think they are just mentally and physically exhausted.
Right. It’s different this year. I sent out a form to get FREE tutoring by trained Math mentors from UC Berkeley. No one has filled it out yet. Two weeks, 0 responses. Parents, and I am one, are just stressed, overwhelmed and tired. They just don’t have capacity. Like if their kid is getting up and going, that is enough.
Give your students a lot of time to do their assignment in class often. You can even make certain problems due before they walk out the door. You can then walk around and monitor and help students, because most students wont work at home and if they do, you dont know if its their work anyway. You will get a better idea of what they know and dont know by doing it this way.
To help motivate parents, I’ve linked student and parent in google classroom so that the receive my reminders. In the beginning of the school year I called parents of students who have not turned in homework every Friday. I called fewer and fewer as the year progressed. I haven’t called any for 2022 so I think it worked.
