Hello im in a dilemma here and im feeling 50/50 about it.

I left my sales job ( car sales) to pursue a better balance and career growth and i landed on this job that is construction sales, but when I went in to the interview they switched me over to work as a field worker since I have no experience in that sort of construction work. They did tell me that within a year or two I can be switched back into sales and earn pure commission from there.

Is this a put together or an opportunity?

Did you express any prior experience in the field work you're doing when they interviewed you? Seems a bit odd (and quite frankly shady) that they would bump you from sales to labor like that.

like

Yes i do have prior experience with the construction field but to them it wouldn’t be ideal because i dont have experience in their field of work, so best option for them was to offer me labor work and then promote to sales

Only you can determine that

like

Yea it sounds correct. I should’ve stated that i do have experience in construction then went to sales. But they want me to go back to construction and then sales all over again.

Honestly owning a construction company for 16 years, I would only say that it is normal to move someone into the field if they’re aiming towards a position in the field, that’s higher up but in sales. I think that is far too long to put you into that position if you interviewed and were hired for the sales position. I do understand that they would like you to see how the field works maybe so you can understand it better since coming from car sales but I would negotiate the time for sure.

It’s closer to what I studied, but don’t know how to make the jump as it seems an internal transfer could take 6+months/senior rank and a lot of convincing. Is it better to jump firms/has anyone done this?
