I was so focused on business results and was "all business all the time". I didn't take the time to build trusted relationships by being more personal and vulnerable and creating time and space for non work dialogue. I was seen as a hard ass even though I'm a total marshmallow inside but never let it be shown. It required a significant shift and focus on it until it became more natural and now I've developed a very strong followership as a result.
Ignore self doubt when it creeps in. Don’t assume seniority means you know everything, and don’t let your staff look “up” for answers. Ask lots of questions and really listen. Empower teams to solve problems and reward critical thinking. Look for ways to positively connect with your new peers and cultivate connection points with other groups and your team(s).
Don’t try to be someone else. Be authentically you. Figure out what your key business metrics are and don’t lose sight of them.
I took on too much at once. Tried to please everyone all the time. This led to me burning out, being constantly stressed, and feeling like I had to solve everything. Be strategic about your time - what problems do you want to solve and in what order? Learn how to set priorities, execute, and move onto the next one. You’ll get more done and be happier along the way.
Your job is to help your team grow and progress. So don’t worry about needing to be in control and I’m charge. Focus on service leadership.
Set clear criteria and make sure everyone understands the parameters for a positive outcome. Then block and tackle to let the team get there.
Sometime you know the answer. But directing the team may tell they “what” to do. But not “why”. Take the time to hear people out and bring them to the conclusion you have so they understand the path to get there. And who knows? They might even have a better suggestion than what you thought of.
