How do/have you handled a negative coworker that just complains and bad mouths their job?

I usually hear what they have to say in the beginning. After a few weeks or so, I start talking about the positives of the job. Then I'll remind them in the middle of a rant that they are more than welcome to leave at any time. That one usually shut them up for a bit.

Perfection!

I don’t. The most important thing we all have is time. I’m not sharing mine to hear constant negativity when my time is spent better elsewhere.

Fair enough.

Help them get promoted to customer by making sure everyone in leadership know their downfalls, errors, and mistakes. Just play the long game and drop subtle hints every so often.

So wise. The long game takes planning, patience and wisdom. Great insight.

Listen thoughtfully but keep my thoughts to myself.

Everyone has a different experience, so I try to respect that without getting unnecessarily caught up in drama.

Complaining about the suck was basically my entire time in service.

I spent almost 10 years as an enlisted medic with an Airborne Infantry unit.

Rough? Yeah, but not because of the complaining. That and dark humor were just coping mechanisms.

PARTNERS: two questions —1. If you see an associate has really low hours for the month, do you imagine them chillen on a beach somewhere or do you consider they probably spent most of their days sitting in front of the computer being “available”? 2. If you send an associate a random e-mail on a weekend like “Can you pull X and send to Y”, would you get annoyed if they responded saying they weren’t by a comp or would you consider it reasonable that they wouldn’t be by a comp on a weekend?

Small firm (my boss, me, & a paralegal). After a hearing I did not handle, boss intended to seek review of the ruling in its entirety. What was communicated to me by paralegal was to seek review of a portion.

Seeking review is now time-barred. Boss is not upset, but this is 1 case & 1 problem. There are other cases & other stories.

How do I talk to my boss about being more present (boss is never in office, has “too many” emails, never answers his phone) without being seen as insubordinate?

Help- my SIL showed me two dresses she rented for my shower, and I think they are super bridal/not very appropriate to wear as a guest or bridesmaid. I have asked others and they agree. I feel like my own outfit, a simple jumpsuit, pales in comparison to how over the top these dresses are. What can I say or do? I feel really down but also don’t want to start WW3 by saying something to her. I feel like I now need to rush to buy a new outfit.

If I went on active duty orders, can I use those orders to break my lease early without penalty?

For those of you who got out at 10, do you wish that you rode it out to 20? I’m at a crossroad and I’m not sure what to do. Have some active/reserve time, wrapping up graduate school, and am now considering either a) come back to the business world or b) go active and retire before 50 and live off a nice pension. Obviously there are draws to both. I’m an officer for what it’s worth so I can realistically retire at O-5, MAYBE O-6.
