It depends on the reason as to why they’d not be well-received. Is it because the other team members would be jealous, or because they have formed a clique, or some other ego-driven reason? Because if that’s the case, you should definitely bring in someone different to diversify the pool and disrupt a potential echo chamber. It also depends on how achieved this new person is and how soon they would be able to be productive, particularly if training by other teammates would be required to achieve this productivity.
Very much so important, toxic environment starts from that very one. If it’s someone you worry about this already even prior to starting, I think it’s a red flag.
