About once a month. But I'm admin, so I'm the one calling to tell them their kid is suspended for fighting or cursing out a teacher, something like that.
I'd be interested in the court case that would come out of "My kid fought and got suspended and now I want to sue the school admin." That'd be a novel argument, at least. But thus far it's only been idle threats.
I haven't been threatened with a lawsuit in 5 years but I get threatened by parents at least once every two years that they're going to get me fired. Knocking on wood to make it through this school year without incident.
Well how dare you have expectations for students? That they go to a school to learn? 😂 Too bad you can’t counter with a threat to sue the parent for educational neglect
Many times, usually just them venting, but I'm quick to clip that off. If they keep it up, I give them my lawyers contact information and inform them thanks to your silly, baseless little tantrum they can now enjoy corresponding with my lawyer not me.
Also if anyone tries to go that route, (only 2 have really tried in 20 years) he sends them a warning shot; explaining his hourly rate and that everytime this happens, he ends up getting paid by them not me and they should know how expensive his rates are.
Once someone bothered him twice, but never a third time.
One time a parent sued every teacher their child had over all 4 years of HS, and the school itself over 504 accomodations. The suit was filed after the student had been in college for a year or so. Parent claimed the school hadn't prepared him for college. That's the only time in 18 years of teaching. The case was thrown out.

I can’t recall a time when parents threatened to sue me, but I’ve been the topic of discussion on Facebook several times. Does that count?! Lol
I caught a student cheating red handed, had the visual evidence, and the backing of admin. Presented all to Dad and he said he was going to sue the school because I wasn't following his IEP, I was BTW. I've never been more angry in my life. That a parent would threaten to sue the school because his son was a cheater. Sad! That's whats being taught all too much at home.

You've hit the nail on the head: that's what's being taught at home.
Do your best, but there's no way you can undo, in six hours a day, the damage his father is doing to him in the other eighteen. Don't beat yourself up over someone else's failure to parent.
i was threatened a few times in my career, but each time was completely baseless, and once the truth came out the parent walked away with their tail between their legs. never once a "sorry my kid was a liar"
Never. And I hope it never happens!
