I’m in the same boat. Took a job at a really strong place after being in some mediocre places, and when I say I was nervous starting out, I mean I was physically ill the first three weeks.
Now that I’ve calmed down a little, I tell myself that they knew what they were hiring because I did an assignment & they saw my resume.
I also try to add value in unusual ways wherever I can. What I lack in formal training, I try to make up for in grit, creativity and positive attitude.
The good news is that reputable shops generally have templates and methods, and for the first few weeks you’ll be expected to learn those.
Ask to meet with other strategists, and ask them and your boss to point you in the direction of pitches and strategy work. And shadow them on projects.
Great points, thank you. I'm in a highly visible role, so have already been set up with strategy heads in different offices. Nerve wracking for expectations, but also great for training.
