I'm 49 and I have nothing saved for retirement. Over the years, any money I would save in a 401k, I would cash out due to an emergency -- car break down, being out of work, etc. Now I have 15 to 20 years to retirement and don't know where to start. Can anyone offer advice?

Start budgeting for emergency so you don’t have to liquidate retirement accounts

As much as I think Dave Ramsey is really just a mega-church pastor pretending to be a financial expert, his strategy is appropriate for somebody just starting to figure out their finances. Basically, don’t carry any debt other than your mortgage, keep an emergency fund, and save a big chunk of your income (maxing out tax shelters if possible).

I also started saving for retirement very late in life, for “reasons”, and my house is a big part of my retirement plan. I want to pay off as much of it as a i can while I’m still working, and will downsize and/or move to a lower cost of living location when I retire.

like

Thanks everyone for your advice. I'm going to work on it. I'm starting a new job -- again. I'll work hard to get the emergency fund set up.

like

You need to make more money. Look for another job, additional training, another stream of income etc

like

While some may disagree with his advice look up Dave Ramsey baby steps

like

Agree on this. Generally not his biggest fan, but his baby steps 1-3 are great when you need some starting direction.

like

-eliminate debt (May not want to payoff the mortgage quickly, if you have one with a low rate.)
-drastically reduce expenses
-create a 3-6 month emergency fund to prevent from draining your retirement savings
-start saving in your retirement accounts

There is no quick fix or magic advice. As with everything, it’s work and sacrifice to save enough to retire.

like

Track your expenses so you can set up a budget and keep to it. Make sure to factor in a deposit to a savings account and include that deposit in your direct deposit arrangement so you never see it in your checking account and embrace that form of object permanence: if you don’t see the money in your checking account, it doesn’t exist, and go along your way. It will add up to building an emergency fund so you don’t have to touch your 401(k).

My boyfriend and I make 200K combined and live in NJ. We have $1000 in monthly car payments combined. That’s all we owe. Our credit scores are in the 800s. We have 50K to put down on a home. We have done the math and I know we can afford much more but he doesn’t want to buy more than a 400K home. I’m almost positive we can afford 500K and be more than ok. But then he starts to talk about how much kids cost and how we will be house poor and we won’t be able to afford kids. 🤔 Am I insane??

Never dealt with this before, so wanted to ask if anyone has ever had an instance where the insurance didn't cover the outstanding balance of the loan and the insured then owed money? Car was $35k, $7k down, finance $28k. Gap insurance is through lender, not auto insurer.

Need advice. Have some credit card debt that I’ve been working to pay off. Have made progress but want to lower it quickly. We have dual income, with a house (~$300k in equity), 1 kid and 1 on the way. I’ve looked into debt consolidation via HELOC but also have ~$80k in vested equity in my company that I haven’t touched. Get equity refreshes every year. Would it be smarter to cash out $15k-$20k of that to pay debt vs. a HELOC at ~5% given that will still require mthly payments

I racked up about $20k in credit card debt due to a confluence of things happening at once (move, school expenses , etc ). I have a fair amount of paper assets but not a much free cash. Assets are down a decent amount with the current market cycle and I’d prefer not to sell them to cover the debt , although they easily could. Any suggestions how to handle the credit card debt without racking up tons of ongoing card interest?
