Is it reasonable to be expected to respond to "urgent" emails when on PTO or is this expectation ridiculous?

PTO means you’re on vacation. It’s part of your pay and benefits. Anyone that does work during their PTO isn’t actually using the intended benefit. So yes, that expectation is ridiculous.

You’re neither a brain surgeon nor the producer making big bucks. When you’re on PTO don’t even open your work email.

Gave up my corporate cell phone for this reason. My personal time is MY time. I’m not getting paid extra to be on call.

like

I’m not responding to shit on PTO

like

No, it is not. PTO should be part one's self-care, and balance as it relates to work-life balance

like

No it most certainly is not reasonable.

like

No, never respond. You are not required to.

like

I would hope you have a back up set up for any urgent requests, particularly if it has customer impacts.

like

Why in the world are you checking work emails while on PTO anyways...!?

That's my short answer...

My slightly longer answer would just echo much of what's already here. However there was a company I worked for once that took that sort of thing VERY seriously. If someone was on vacation and it was determined that the nature of a situation couldn't wait for their return, and the employee was called, the company would pay a penalty of sorts to the employee for the hassle.

I don't recall the exact details of the arrangement, whether it was paid directly as a days wage, or a days worth of PTO returned to the employee for the disruption.

You might consider proposing something like that...

like

I put that into a folder called "Work" on my phone. That folder gets put on mute. If I check it, that's on me; still doesn't mean I need to respond. But nothing is popping up while I'm on vacation.

For most of us, no, we shouldn’t. However, depending on your position, it may be necessary at times.

Ridiculous….. your time off is part of your compensation. Your time to separate yourself from work and recharge. It is great they have so much faith in your ability to solve an issue, but if they can’t get by for one or two weeks without you, then management has failed at cross training to ensure redundancy in such cases.

I'll offer a differing opinion. If you think of work as just work, then I think you draw that line and hold it steady. I always wanted to go above and beyond to show effort and to "not be like everyone else". Admittedly, I really enjoy my work in insurance and always have, even the most stressful parts. I still make time for vacation and check out daily for family time, but I think hard and fast rules about my time and what I'm paid to do are fine...if you want to be treated like everyone else. It is a choice and it your choice. Just don't expect to special treatment come raise, promotion or recognition time, but you also shouldn't be treated poorly or pressured if you make the choice to check totally out on PTO time.

I just started a new job 2 months ago, benefits and PTO don’t start until 90 days in so I still have a month before I can take off any time, and today found out my company doesn’t offer paid maternity leave.
I’m really struggling handling the symptoms and maintaining my full time job. Thinking about looking for a part time job to have more time to myself through the pregnancy since I won’t be getting a paid leave anyways, but lost on where to start looking. Any recommendations?

I recently had an initial interview for a technical recruiter position. The guy on the phone stated that this is not a 9-5 job and long hours are expected. I proceed to ask how much PTO is offered and he said that is not recommend within the first 6 months of working and the harder you work the more PTO you receive. From that conversation, I saw instant red flags. Any thoughts?

Question for folks with second homes: Considering buying a vacation home but would be primarily for family use. We currently have a primary residence with a mortgage balance of ~640K, so my understanding is I could only deduct the mortgage interest on 110K of the second mortgage to stay under the 750K cap. If I were to buy the second home through an LLC, would that allow me to exceed that 750K since the expenses of the second home would be pass through expenses/income?
