As a technical person who is comfortable picking up technology quickly, I’m trying not to take “not being technical enough” too personally. In past roles I’ve been able to pick up new tools within 2–4 weeks and go deep in specific areas, and I believe I could have done the same here.
Different hiring managers value different things. It’s more a reflection of what that manager values in preference to other traits, than a reflection of your ability.
Personally I’d rather hire a creative and critical thinker that shows aptitude to learn quickly. I try to never hire for things that can be quickly learned. As you found out, others hiring managers want the specific deep tech baked in from Day 1.
IMHO your approach is fine, you simply didn’t find the right fit in that instance.
