They have to offer 12 weeks under FMLA but it doesn’t have to be paid. Ask if they offer short term disability for pregnancy. That way the firm doesn’t have to pay out of pocket.
Thanks for the confirmation. I will keep looking, but Wisconsin doesn’t seem to have much.
I (M) just asked my (small) firm a similar question, and was given 12 weeks paid. They hadn’t had a policy in place before. Just ask! I framed it like “my wife is due in a few months, and I was wondering if there was any kind of policy for parental leave? Just trying to get a picture of what I can expect.”
Rockstar move.
Talk to them about taking six months unpaid, if you can possibly afford it. I wouldn’t try to change their policy. But, do what you can to get with you and your baby need. I’m sorry that so many parental leave policies in the US are abysmal and absurd.
Oh my, I WISH 6 months! I only took 12 weeks my past pregnancy and was hoping to again, but he didn’t seem happy like it was too big of an ask. That’s kind of why I am hesitant to mention further requests or questions. I don’t see any mention in their handbook, so I assume the answer is no - but it’s very outdated. Unfortunately, it’s a very small and “older” partner male firm. I don’t think they have had to deal with young female staff in a long time.
What about medical leave?
