You are not alone on this one. Set clear boundaries and when it’s off time, be off and present wherever you are

I feel like you are saying something different than what ppl are replying to - you are saying you get more satisfaction and self worth from work than personal life, yes?
I’m going to get beat up for this, but I actually think we don’t give enough credit to this mindset. There is a general assumption that ppl want to only do what is necessary at work so they can spend more time at home (work to live if you will), but I think it’s perfectly viable to also get the satisfaction you need for life out of work. If that’s true, you will certainly go very far in consulting. I don’t think either approach is right or wrong, most ppl will say you are sad/pathetic/etc if you are a workaholic but I don’t see why that has to be the case if you enjoy it.
Feels like there is a disconnect between what OP is saying vs. (most) replies.
Op: that drive is valuable and will get you far professionally.
Are you me?!
I hang out with friends that are similar. With family I drag all my stuff around. No problems working or studying during family get togethers. They get it.
Yep, S1 is right. I actually like to work lol. My family is the same.. Work is just an extension of life. When we go on vacations together - we’ll play golf, snowboard or do whatever all day.. in the evenings if we feel like it we’ll all sit around on our laptops catching up on work if needed. Then we’ll all shut it down and hang out.
I do personal stuff during work, sometimes do work stuff during personal stuff. It’s all the same to me.
Don’t get me wrong. Sometimes I’m on projects where people are annoying and i want them to leave me alone. Like right now.. I’m looking forward to our 5 day holiday. I mostly have control to how much i want to do or not do though so that helps.
If i ever get to a point where I don’t enjoy my job. I’m out!
You’re not alone! There’s a “balance” and it looks different for everyone. For me, I just try my best to keep at least my Sunday’s free for friends/family time, as well as the occasional Friday or Saturday night for relaxing with friends. Monday-Friday (and even Saturday mornings if I really needed) all day is enough for me to focus on work and career achievements. I think it’s also important to have friends who are understanding if you can’t come out for a night on the weekend if you’re busy with catching up on work, and especially in the middle of the week.
That being said, I also know there’s only so much work I can focus on and put time into before I burn out, so spending time with friends ends up being a nice way to de-stress and forget about work for a second so I don’t completely burn out.
