I mean if you feel like you are on your way out then yes.
To expand, you don’t want to be terminated with cause — you lose benefits, pay, etc. You also are not eligible for unemployment (at least I believe this is the case in many/most states, but I could be wrong).
By negotiating to be “laid off,” you can retain many benefits and possibly have a generous package that extends your pay for several months. This would also not be a red flag for future employers (laid off is always better than being fired with cause).
Hope this helps
In some states doing this protects you from termination. Reason being is that you can claim you offered the employer to lay you off but instead terminated your employment
Some dude wanted this in another thread. He was working with fishy / questionable partners and he wanted to be laid off, so he doesnt need to repay his edu expenses.
I don’t think it’s that uncommon in industry, my wife’s uncle was close to retirement and kept asking about it for close to two years and they finally gave him a nice package to leave and retire early
My parents did it years ago after a big pharma merger. Seems like the more temporary nature of consulting work would make it a much tougher prospect.
