My doctor has not raised any concern about my kidneys. What I have found to be sustainable and satisfying and healthful is to do keto Sunday through Friday and Saturday give myself permission to eat whatever the hell I want when I want. This lets me get the cravings out of my system and just doing it 6 days a week for me as done tremendous wonders for my energy level my waistline and how I look. Been doing this since September of last year and it has been awesome
.. the minute you eat carbs you bloat, so you should have a small amount of carbs each day so your body remembers how to deal with them - any truth in this too?
I don’t know anything about kidney health and keto (I’ve read more about fatty liver concerns than kidney concerns), but to the second point, keto isn’t zero carb. We still consume carbs (vegetables primarily but small amounts of carbs are found in many foods) and our bodies will always use glucose/glycogen as a first source of energy. The body won’t forget how to digest them. Now a lot of bad carbs (white bread, sugars etc) are very inflammatory and may cause bloating and discomfort when reintroduced into your diet.
I’ve also read that the longer you maintain a keto diet, the more carbs you can have without falling out of ketosis - upwards of even 100g for some people!
Drink water for the kidneys, lots of water. Because we don’t consume carbs our body has a harder time storing water - which is why during the first few weeks of keto you lose so much water weight.
As for eating small amount of carbs each day, no, no truth in that. I’ve heard red meats, but only if you’ve been doing keto without them
Eat good fats and that would be good on your kidneys and stomach. I do more of a low carb, reasonable fat vs. high fat diet. I take more proteins than what Keto diet recommends but only by another 10-20%. And mostly chicken. I am trying to lose liver fat through weight reduction so I do not overdo fats. I have become carb conscious. Even the low carbs I eat are not empty carbs. They come from Cauliflower rice which has completely replaced my grains (wheat and rice). I find Nutritionfacts.org to be a good source of data. Helps separate facts from fiction.
I’m interested in hearing the answers to this. I haven’t started- only considered, but I think I’d have a really hard time mentally keeping up with the fats portion of the macros. Right now I’m trying to do a better job at "all healthy foods” in moderation. Sounds like people love keto, I just don’t know if I’d like it.
Starcom1...what you are doing ain't bad either. You should stick to what is good for you in the long run. Eating healthy kills less people than eating unhealthy. No denying that. Keto also requires discipline so if you struggle in that area, Keto would be an uphill battle. I encourage people to give it a shot if they do not have any chronic health issues.
