Not ridiculous at all. I used alcohol as a crutch for making friends. It has been hard to learn how to make connections in sobriety. I have made many through AA though. Joining fellowship dinner or coffee before and after meetings has opened the door to making friends, doing activities beyond the confines of AA.
I’ve made incredible friends through AA. Ive also reconnected with old friends who were never big drinkers to begin with.
I’ve made many life-long friends in AA. These friends and mentors taught me how to live in the world. Most of the friends I make these days are people with the same interests as me. I enjoy running, shooting pool, yoga, climbing, poker, etc.
My life didn’t end when I got sober… staying sober through the twelve steps gave me the ability & freedom to live the life I always wanted.
Not dumb at all. I have exactly zero sober friends. I’ve found that I gravitated my friendships to people who just rarely drink. And are more open to doing fun activities versus just going to the bar to hang out. I have to be more proactive with ideas for hanging out as well.
I don’t mind hanging with people if they are having a beer. Just am not spending a whole night sitting at a bar as the singular social thing.
It’d be nice to have some sober friends but I’ve found the balance within my current friendships and leaning into some of those more (and stepping back from others).
I have made good friend acquaintances in AA, but also joined other groups in my area by searching Facebook for meet ups and such with off roading and other hobbies. I wanted to throw out there that there is not one size fit all. All your friends don't have to be in AA.
That's was supposed to say good friends AND acquaintances. Oops.
I was thinking the same. But I did find and app called Phoenix that will allow you to do so. It has quite the options for hobbies as well.
