We have a few new hires, mostly Gen Z, and one of them goes by they/them pronouns. I heard them say that they don't want to work under their manager because he never addresses them with the right pronouns. I spoke to the manager about this, and he said he isn't doing it intentionally; he's just not used to using they/them as pronouns for a person. As a team player, I want the new hire to feel accepted, but also want them to understand that the manager just needs some time to get accustomed. How would you intervene?

Insane. People didn't even get my name right when I started working. I can't imagine being uncomfortable based on someone not using random pronouns that I decided to designate.

I was thinking the same thing 😂 I can't remember anybody's name and I don't expect anyone to remember mine.

I’m struggling to understand why so many people are so offended and outraged at being asked to make a very small amount of effort to show basic respect to a very small group of people who have truly experienced more than their share of persecution in recent years. Trans and nonbinary people exist and have always existed. Biological sex is not a binary, there are real, proven, genetic variations and there are absolutely variations in how people experience gender. This is not a problem! We can all handle the tiny efforts needed to make everyone feel welcome and respected for who they are - and this goes beyond gender. For example, it is reasonable for people to expect their colleagues to pronounce their names correctly too, even if the name is unfamiliar and it requires effort to get it right. And just in case anyone is wondering, I am a cisgender woman (assigned female at birth, always identified as female), Gen X, from Texas.

likefunnyupliftinghelpfulsmart

I am non-binary.
I think that my own community is pushing this thing too far for several reasons :
1 - Non-binary is NOT trans. I am not trans. I do not desire to change my body and I don't think my suffering is even close to that of a trans person. Period, full stop.
2 - There is a HUGE amount of cultural appropriation at play that is almost never mentioned. Non-binary cultures are 18 and counting, and we're asking our society to fake it as if it was always a thing in the West - it's not the case and that's not how it works.
Enforcing something by making people feel bad because we suddenly want to play having the same culture as indigenous societies with 3 genders is the PEAK of woke irony.
Also, making people feel terrible about things they don't know/are trying to get accommodated to on purpose is genuinely one of the least kind thing anyone can do.
To top if all of, while singular "they" is indeed a thing in English, other langages like French use lazy mashups like "ielle" which is literally "hshe" (il/elle = he/she).
I refuse for this travesty of "respect" to be used as my pronoun, full stop. It's literally laughing at us.
Overall if you're a trans person then yes this is genuine.
There are also biological variations in trans people.
Personally I do not think that me as a non-binary individual which is how I choose to identify and not anything else as far as I'm concerned, has the right to be this incredibly asinine about this.
It's like a physician always telling people wrong because this and that scientific thing was disproven 24/7 - ok, we get it.
"This table isn't solid is 90% void" cool beans, and it IS true.
But will I try to explain that to everyone all the time? Please end me.
Personally I have tried and figured out that not caring was far better for my mental health. However as I said, I do not experience gender dysphoria so that's speaking for myself and also other enby people who I think may feel the same but won't voice their concerns to a community that has mostly excluded me and misgendered me more than anyone for appearing as male - ironic, isn't it? - and I get it.

I’ve been a manager in this position before and let me tell you, I rather just refer to someone by name than to try and remember who/what pronouns they want! Im a millennial and I feel as a manager I got other shit to worry about. Therefore, calling someone by name is just easier and and not offensive. If I was you, I would just remind your manager to call them by name and stop referring to them by “her” or “him” assuming that’s what he does.

like

I have that too. I am the most liberal person and have no problem with who you are and what you do . I am always it's all good so you! Be who you want to be. BUT! ITS VERY HARD TO GET USED TO THE PRONOUN THING IT TOOL AWHILE TO GET USED TO THE SHE INSTEAD OF HE ECT. I'm not misgendering ! I'm 57 and trying to navigate the world how it has changed and what is acceptable. I'm never being" anti You " Most of us aren't. If you look like a man and have a name tag that says" Ginger" and demand to be called that and expect random ppl at a grocery store deli to adhere to your name and be treated like a female when obviously male. You have to understand the older generation just wants their deli ham not a complete history or class on pronouns and gender. When she does go off on it when they say Have a good day Sir! Leave it be. She does the whole thing and they look j listen to her and walk away saying have a good day Sir . They don't care they want their ham! It's not racist or bigotry! You look like a man they want ham!

Depending on the state that you are in, this could be a discrimination suit waiting to happen. I would advise with your in-house counsel on the labor laws in your state before taking any action. Until then, advise your managers to address everyone by their name and wear a name badge if needed.

Talk to the manager and make sure they understand that you expect them to use the correct pronouns, and that if they mess up and use the wrong ones, they are simply to apologize and correct themselves. Then talk to them both at the same time, and say that the company policy is to use correct pronouns, but request that the Gen Z give some grace to the manager as it is hard to adjust to using they/them as a matter of course. As long as you are open and honest, and everyone is coming to the matter with good and supportive intentions, hopefully that should solve the problem. Just showing that the manager is trying (with an apology and correcting what they say), and giving the new employee the right to gently correct their manager when the manager makes a mistake, should resolve the situation.

like

There are a lot of they/thems…I just use they/them for everyone it’s just easier.

“where they going“ “can you ask them for me?”

Honestly, it’s just so much easier because sometimes I don’t know if somebody’s pronouns and I can’t tell… this solves that too.

like

"They/Them" is not a person. How would I handle it? I wouldn't. I would only hire normal people.

like

There is only two genders.

like

Tell the manager to get with the program. There's no reason to treat this any differently than if he were calling a male employee by she/her pronouns.

like

People shouldn't be obligated to lie. You are either him or a her, if they don't want to face reality. Don't make it everybody else's problem.

like

You refer to everyone by they/them before you know what gender they are already... How is this any different?

Its actually really simple of a solution, just treat everyone like an object rather than a person.

Has Charlie finished in the toilet, ITS gone over ITS break time, THEIR constantly doing this now. Perhaps ITS not able to find the correct toilet because IT cant see which on IT should go into, perhaps we should replace IT with another one.

See how easy that was, just speak about people like their objects. Thats how the They/Thems want you to talk about them.

like

Or instead of going to an active effort to make people uncomfortable (not the first time I'm sure) you could just use they/them. It's not rocket science and you do it automatically already when you don't know the person you're referring to.

Why on earth would you want to go out of your way to make people uncomfortable?

You are on the right track. If the manager is being respectful and corrects the behavior (don't make a big deal about it but a "sorry" then quickly correct it and move on) it is usually appreciated. Being a belligerent jerk and making a choice to disrespect someone, however, is not okay. I think being respectful to everyone is important if you want to have the best and brightest employees and decrease turnover. Please don't listen to all the ignorant bigots posting about how their little feelings are so hurt by someone wanting to be treated like a human being at work. I don't consider respecting your coworkers "new age" or "insane". I also don't think this is a generational issue. There are many nonbinary and transgender people who are not Gen Z. It is not a new concept and has existed in many cultures since the dawn of civilization. And yes, some people are born intersex.

like

I will only refer to someone as their ID states. It's not reasonable to ask anyone to refer to you as someone you made up. If you are so concerned about your pronouns so much so that it affects your work, then it's time to either grow up and behave professionally or get help from a professional therapist as it is obvious that you are not emotionally ready to work in the real world where actual working adults reside.

Thoughts on “special” salary grades. I just found out the VP I was offered is not a grade 12 like most comparable roles (verified). Also not an 11, but an 11A. Slightly higher than an 11, a good bit lower than a 12. All due to the fact that it’s a leap from my current position. Why should that matter…..shouldn’t it pay what it should pay if I am selected, rather that curving down towards my current rate?
