Insane. People didn't even get my name right when I started working. I can't imagine being uncomfortable based on someone not using random pronouns that I decided to designate.
I was thinking the same thing 😂 I can't remember anybody's name and I don't expect anyone to remember mine.
I’m struggling to understand why so many people are so offended and outraged at being asked to make a very small amount of effort to show basic respect to a very small group of people who have truly experienced more than their share of persecution in recent years. Trans and nonbinary people exist and have always existed. Biological sex is not a binary, there are real, proven, genetic variations and there are absolutely variations in how people experience gender. This is not a problem! We can all handle the tiny efforts needed to make everyone feel welcome and respected for who they are - and this goes beyond gender. For example, it is reasonable for people to expect their colleagues to pronounce their names correctly too, even if the name is unfamiliar and it requires effort to get it right. And just in case anyone is wondering, I am a cisgender woman (assigned female at birth, always identified as female), Gen X, from Texas.
I am non-binary.
I think that my own community is pushing this thing too far for several reasons :
1 - Non-binary is NOT trans. I am not trans. I do not desire to change my body and I don't think my suffering is even close to that of a trans person. Period, full stop.
2 - There is a HUGE amount of cultural appropriation at play that is almost never mentioned. Non-binary cultures are 18 and counting, and we're asking our society to fake it as if it was always a thing in the West - it's not the case and that's not how it works.
Enforcing something by making people feel bad because we suddenly want to play having the same culture as indigenous societies with 3 genders is the PEAK of woke irony.
Also, making people feel terrible about things they don't know/are trying to get accommodated to on purpose is genuinely one of the least kind thing anyone can do.
To top if all of, while singular "they" is indeed a thing in English, other langages like French use lazy mashups like "ielle" which is literally "hshe" (il/elle = he/she).
I refuse for this travesty of "respect" to be used as my pronoun, full stop. It's literally laughing at us.
Overall if you're a trans person then yes this is genuine.
There are also biological variations in trans people.
Personally I do not think that me as a non-binary individual which is how I choose to identify and not anything else as far as I'm concerned, has the right to be this incredibly asinine about this.
It's like a physician always telling people wrong because this and that scientific thing was disproven 24/7 - ok, we get it.
"This table isn't solid is 90% void" cool beans, and it IS true.
But will I try to explain that to everyone all the time? Please end me.
Personally I have tried and figured out that not caring was far better for my mental health. However as I said, I do not experience gender dysphoria so that's speaking for myself and also other enby people who I think may feel the same but won't voice their concerns to a community that has mostly excluded me and misgendered me more than anyone for appearing as male - ironic, isn't it? - and I get it.
Please refrain from intervening unless you are an HR representative or possess knowledge of current employment laws in the relevant region. Additionally, consult your organization's discrimination policies. An HR or legal professional should conduct a thorough investigation of the situation.
Start calling the manager by their incorrect title. I bet they will adapt quickly to addressing someone correctly.
You shouldn’t have to do anything more. The offending mgr should explain to the coworker what they told you. They should work it out
You can learn your new dogs name in a couple of hours but cannot use the correct pronouns with the new hire? Sounds lazy and bigoted to me, if a 65 year old "boomer" can do this why can't you?
they/them isn't correct pronouns when a human being literally can NOT BE a they/them. You're a nurse advocating for insanity and everyone to play along. draw a blood sample, look at their bone scan and you'll know which gender someone is...
Forcing anyone to say certain words is called slavery. You have freedom of fought and calling someone by their name is not an insult.
This Gen Z person is going to be a thorn in the side of the company. No one ever spells my name correctly or pronounces it correctly. I have to accept that I have an unusual spelling of my name. It's unreasonable to expect people to get it right and I would only be setting myself up to be upset every time it happened. That is exactly what this person is doing. It seems they are more focused on pronouns than getting their job done. This person is not a long term fit on the team. I would act accordingly.
I would refer the gender neutral new hire to the employee assistance program and politely encourage them to seek mental health care. If they are angry with that, I'd grow up and stop playing this woke joke game. It's a fad and it will pass.
Thank you for this post, for it highlights microagressions. I speak as a supervisor and mental health therapist, and I am quite hawk-like when I hear other supervisors treat such issues flippantly, pulling the whole "its not intentional." Alright, fine. How often does this happen? What else is he not used to? Curious, how does he react when he is disagreed with? Like say I showed up to work there, and I held a PhD in Business Marketing and preferred someone refer to me as Doctor--and he knew this, and instead said my first name, and followed with "oh its not intentional," how might that land?
Managers are supposed to model behavior, and lead by being and showing--if a worker was African American, and named Tom, and the manager called him "boy" would that change things?
It's not an issue for you, or the new hire, why is what someone else is doing or asking to be treated bothering the boss, who is using passive-aggressive communication to get away with behavior that can, and does, lead to a hostile environment, which leads to audits/investigations, possible liability, illegality, lawsuits, media, and on and on.
What would I do? Ask the manager about it, ask him what his issue is, and recommend he attend mandatory training on engaging people who are different. If he laughed at me, scoffed at me, rolled his eyes, I would go to his boss with "we have a problem here," because the manager, older, more experienced and so forth, is doing what--bullying, This leads to what...in this day and age? Potentialities for verbal/physical violence, and so forth. If the company does not want: 1. the gaze of law enforcement or the local government getting involved, 2. paying attorneys fees, 3. being subject to an audit, 4. being portrayed in the media as not protecting its own people that it has hired....you see where this is going. And don't say I am over-reacting--something happens in similar incidents, and media investigates and if it comes out that "....was bullied by ____ at ____, who employed him for 10 years as a manager, and did NOTHING to intervene," where do u see yourselves employed?
Yes people forget--it will happen. Apologize and make efforts NOT to do it again--this does not stop? Terminate the manager, hire a new one. It is cheaper, less headache, less liability. No its not funny, its not a joke. From a manager and business perspective, we desire effective workers who want to do their best for the product because they are valued for who they are--if a worker cannot accept a simple issue like this, he's not worth it. Fire him, hire a fresh out of grad school manager you can mold, for less money. No liability.
Simple as that.
I was told buy a new hire that I should call anyone by a pronoun that I wasn't sure if they went by one. It's the culture Varonis is fostering. Nobody should be forced to go against their beliefs. It creates a hostile workplace, I liked this person until that comment. Varonis wants inclusion despite the conflict.
I'll respond to your gender identity if I am interested in dating you and will act accordingly. Otherwise I'm just going by biology.
Sounds like your coworker has a disability.
Ok
Suggest that they move to Russia )))
Why the manager has to change his norm? It is violence w.r.t. the manager. In general, people with mental disabilities asking to name/call them them/they/thei/thoy/etc. have to have medical assistance in place for socializing with the rest of the society
Honestly the respectful move is simple: use someone’s name or the pronouns they ask for. Everyone slips at first, but making the effort shows respect. I had a friend point me to this AI tool that actually helped me reframe workplace conflicts and communication (https://l.artics-us.com/hey
) —wildly eye-opening. Might help managers who struggle with “adjusting.”
Your new Gen Z hire needs to get over him/herself (however "it" identifies)
Work is a place where we go to perform a task where we are rewarded through receiving a paycheck.
Work is not a place to push your religious or political or any other beliefs or stances.
If you identify as a thermos, then go forth and be a thermos to the best of your ability but don't expect other employees to join in on your delusions.
Anybody who needs that much validation at their place of employment should be going to a therapist instead.
I would just use their preferred pronouns and befriend them. Great coworkers usually override a crappy boss
eh, I mean you can't actually be a they/them, and you literally have to think of different speech patterns around them... I get making people feel included and being diverse, but at some point you're just being a pain... expecting special accommodations amongst a plethora of employees is ridiculous over however you feel at a particular time in your life... Whatever happened to "non-conformist" presenting while still maintaining he/she pronouns...
Can I just ask why you think you need to do anything at all in this situation that has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with you.. I feel like putting yourself inside of that situation or conversation or whatever is just asking for drama, or at least showing everyone you are quick to be in someone’s business.. Maybe this person doesn’t want the manager or whoever to be confronted with this, maybe they are just ranting or expressing a feeling that wasn’t meant for you to run off with and try to “do something about it” I’m speaking from experience, kinda, because I was upset one day with a coworker who had said some things about me that were untrue and really upset me , and another co worker of mine took it upon herself to go tell on the one that upset me, like on my behalf and I was furious because I didn’t want my manager thinking I had any issues with anyone or anything that would make me any less favorable to him, and that’s exactly what happened . My manager from then on just assumed I had issues with other co workers even though I never said a word to him myself ! So maybe just mind your business and stay in your own lane! You don’t have to be captain save a ___ umm save a transgender? Idk my point is you don’t have to try to fix the situation, if that person wanted something to be done, they are an adult and know the correct avenues to take…

Awesome response.
Meeting Introductions: At the start of the next team meeting, facilitate a round of introductions where everyone is asked to share their name, role, and pronouns. Frame this as a standard practice for an inclusive culture, not a reaction to the specific issue.
