I'm my experience hospitals will happily put you on a payment plan. If you earn half decent money and have insurance they probably won't do much on the bill though. Still worth asking them though maybe you'll have better luck than I did.
They asked - they had programs in place you could apply for if you qualified (ie: below poverty line), they would write off certain bills or portions of bills.
I think make a few payments to show good faith. Then, once your husband is unemployed, call and explain the situation and see if they'll negotiate.
Believe they're a change that prevents medical debt from showing up on a credit report.
Check your insurance. I think United has a program called "patient navigator" or something like that... the program is supposed to help negotiate medical bills. Maybe your insurance has something similar?
Do you both cover your kid on your insurance plans?
just mine - cover the entire family
You should request an itemized bill too. Often there are billing errors and things that were incorrectly charged that should help lower your payment and help with negotiating.
It doesn't hurt to call and ask, no impact on credit either as they are giving you a discount not writing off debt. After our second child's birth and lots of related bills I called each of the providers and asked if there was a discount for paying in full immediately. Some of them did give me a discount if I paid during the call, maybe 10% on average of those that did, and others directed me towards the payment plan. We paid the ones that offered a discount first, then set up payments for the rest spread out as long as it let us without charging fees/interest.
There are different approaches, I explicitly said that I was trying to prioritize payments so if they offered a discount I'd pay it right away otherwise it may be a while. This lets them decide if they care more about collecting the full amount or how long it sits in receivables.
this is actually great advice, thank you for helping me think through this.
i’m confused by this. it sounds like you are on a high deductible plan. did you not put money away to cover your deductible, or at least have a line of credit in the same amount?
