As an initial matter I would just try being in the office a bit more if possible. My firm is hybrid but the partners that I work for are in the office 100% of the time. When I first started working for them I definitely had to be in the office and speak to them face to face if I needed more work. Now that they’re comfortable with me though, they’ve also become much more comfortable with giving me plenty to do even if I’m not in the office.
One thing that took me a while to learn as a junior is that partners aren’t mind readers. And they certainly aren’t the best managers. Pop by her office or shoot her an email saying you’d love to work with her more. It can be daunting at first but partners really appreciate it
Speak up to your partner and seek feedback from your supervisor or other senior members of your team if you feel left out at work. Develop relationships with colleagues outside of your immediate team, concentrate on your strengths, and think about your options if you continue to feel undervalued and excluded. Remember to put your health and professional development first.
(Continued) I work for a small group so I do need work from her to have enough billable. I thought about asking her strategically but am worried that she will hold it against me in long term. Should I just let it be?
