Never be the first to namr the number.
Give a higher range and assume the low end.
I say that I’m making X now and expect to go upwards from it. That gives them a floor and gives me an unlimited ceiling.
@ACD1 doesn’t that potentially leave $$ on the table though? Like say you went in saying “I’m making 150 now and I expect to go upwards from here.” And they were looking to make you an offer of 200, but now they’re like, “k cool, 170, then.” (Not trying to sound like a smartass, just genuinely asking, Bc I feel like I fucked myself over a few years ago when I negotiated, so now I’m trying to figure out how to make my next move)
Best advice I ever got about this was to ask for the biggest number you can say out loud without laughing.
Your range should be within 5k.
Ask them to share their budget, if it's inline with what you want than perfect. If they won't disclose, then tell them your high $ but also tell them it's negotiable if the opportunity is right.
Don't give a range. Give one number. You give a range you're opening it up for the low end.
I always give a range, the low end I would be more than happy with. Then when they offer me it, I always say "is there any flexibility with the salary?" Both times they've come back with 5k more.
I never see the point of giving a range because they're always going to give you the lower number, if not lower than that.
You're now at a disadvantage, and they could potentially come back to you with a number within your stated range but below what they budgeted. One way you could claw back a bit more of a footing/leverage is having the total monetary value of your current or expected benefit package ready to serve up when they come back with an offer. And by total, I mean everything - medical/dental/vision/401k match/vesting/perks (phone subsidy, etc.). If there's wiggle room on their end, you can use a benefits package value discussion to expose it.
You _can_ but you’re just negotiating now from a weakened position. How willing to walk are you if you don’t get what you want? That and how badly they want you vs someone else are your remaining leverage. Good luck OP.
@UX Designer. Tell them at that stage you dont know enough about the role yet and that you are very interested in learning more about what the job entails and you can see what kind of value you can bring them before you have a better gauge. Stand firm.
@SS1 I’ve been around long enough not to make 50k mistakes with salary expectations.
@ACD1 those numbers were obviously just placeholders. My point was more that you might give them a floor that’s much lower than their max, so you’ll never be in a position to push for their max.
Asking for a range is asking for the least you’ll take. You just told them. Expect that so get prepared to qualify with other factors (benefits etc) which you might (but probably won’t) be able to parley.
@leo (first poster) how do you respond when they ask what $ you're looking for if you want them to give the first number?
SS1 I highly doubt that, at my level the range isnt exactly that ginormous.
Don't give a range. Or if you have to, make the bottom of the range your high number, and the top something that seems a little ridiculous. Giving them a range is guaranteeing they will offer the low number on the range (if that).
But, what's done is done. Next round, just tell them exactly the number you want, and stick to it.
could I tell them that after learning more about the role and responsibilities, The top number would be more fitting?
