Anyone feel like there are no real opportunities to get out of this industry? I feel so stuck. What helped most in your attempt to leave?

Figuring out what I actually wanted to do. Once you know that, you can create a plan. And both things can be true: you can want to leave but find it very hard to do so for many reasons and that is ok.

When you figured out what you wanted to do, did you go the “passion” or “hobby” route? Personally, I feel so blocked from even knowing what else I may want to do.

like

Yes agreed. I hate when people say “you can do so many things with a law degree!” Like ok name one lol.

For several years I was looking for the exit and then I just gave up. I’m still here grinding away in litigation. Somehow, it’s not so bad anymore.

How many new analysts/associates can I expect for a GE fund to hire each year? I understand each firm/office has varying needs, but I'm struggling to wrap my head around why anyone would even consider T2 consultants, even at the consulting-friendly shops.

Not enough MBB consultants interested in PE to fill all the ex-consultant spots? Personal goal is to build a fighting chance to exit into GE or MM PE

I work with great people. Really can’t say anything bad about my firm in general either. But…I still dislike the entire premise of law firm life, the billable hour, etc.. I’d love to work in a law school setting as a counselor or something but I can’t afford the pay cut. *sigh* Does anyone feel like being a lawyer is just doing homework all day? First world problems I suppose. I’m very thankful to have a job ❤️

I am looking to enter big law. I had a clerkship on a state Business Calendar and am a current first year litigation associate where I have prepared for a trial, taken and defended depositions, and have extensive motion writing practice in tech, business, and employment cases. Is it a waste of time to try and make a move to big law with such few years of experience?

One of my junior associates recently resigned and I've been trying to make an exit myself for several months now. The job market has been really competitive but I am getting closer to getting a new job and moving on. The firm culture isn't great and work-life balance is non existent. My physical and mental health have been suffering, so I really don't think I could stay. How did you avoid the guilt trips from Partners/Senior staff trying to get you to stay?

I’m so miserable every day is painful. I want to go tell pre-law school me it’s not worth the debt because you will hate this career and then feel trapped by the debt. Cross-posting: What was your narrative in interviews for wanting to leave biglaw? Presumably you didn't just say I hate working 60+ hours per week in a disgustingly inefficient, top-heavy organization.

I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation. Still I struggle. Should I try public interest? Not that I don’t need the money but it’s hard to work when I am so detached and find it meaningless
