At firm with strict billables, and we’re starting to fire people for hours. My hours aren’t low, and I always leave a timer running and bill my time contemporaneously. I just feel so overstimulated and uncomfortable in the office that everything feels it takes 10X longer, and I have physical health issues that make the commute take more out of me than most people. I don’t get paid enough to move closer to the office.
I’ve commuted to the city from the NJ side, and I have mixed feelings.
On one hand I agree with you that the commute to/from/in NYC is DRAINING.
However, even though I DETEST the commute but I am self-aware that I CANNOT get anything done if I WFH because there are so many distractions/comforts that I can distract myself, without anyone really keeping me in check.
My solution was to commute to/from NJ.
Hope you figure it out. Best of luck.
Cf. For me, when I was in NYC, I would try to make it so that I would walk if possible rather than take the trains. Not like power walking but something to get the blood pumping. The “exercise” seemed to help counter.
But you survived though! That’s all that matters.
Also, no one will look after your best interest unless you do. It’s your precious and limited time in this life.
Consider going in-house. It can be a better environment. I struggled to focus to be able to bill hours in Biglaw, despite an abundance of work. I just stayed in the office late to make up for my procrastination. Taking away the billable hours requirement takes off a lot of the pressure.
Keep at it... It only takes one! Yeah I would have rejected that offer too.
Consider leaving NY for another market.
