As I’m sure many have experienced, I’m getting dangerously close to what I would consider burnout. I’m experiencing fairly substantial anxiety, which leads to procrastination, which leads to me ultimately pulling all-nighters. It’s a vicious cycle. I’m so thankful for COVID-19 WFH, but it also means I can’t ever unplug and a vacation is obviously a nonstarter this year. How do I pull myself out of this mess?

Take a vacation and unplug, even if it’s just in your own apartment. Take work email off your phone for the week and make it clear you will not have phone or email access for a few days. My firm has been strongly encouraging everyone to take vacation time this summer. It’s been an incredibly stressful period and very important to maintain mental health right now.

like

Find a good therapist to talk through everything and try to take time, even if it’s just an entire evening to not check email, to totally unwind. I figured this out too late and ended up being diagnosed with MDD and on leave until I got myself together. Burn out is real and your mental health and sanity are important to keep going in this profession. Easier said than done, but find ways to put yourself first before work each day when you can.

Currently going through the nerve wrecking 2 week wait. For those who have gone through IVF, did you test at home? If so, how early and was it accurate? Did you feel any symptoms? How early on?

Hello all, We are about to start our first IVF cycle in the next 2 weeks. What questions should I ask my RE before starting the cycle to make sure we are doing everything right. Anything you wish you had known before you went through the cycle.

History: Trying for 3 years. I have a blocked fallopian tube on 1 side and the other ovary had a dermoid cyst that had to be surgically removed. The other ovary does not seem to be responding well and isn't producing eggs. Hence moving to IVF.

TIA!

Nightmare scenario and need your help. I moved into a new place in august knowing I was going to be WFH. Quiet, lots of light.

They just started construction right next to my building with all day noise, including a bull dozer and heavy machinery coming within 6 feet of my window. We’re also on the second floor so I mean RIGHT NEXT TO MY WINDOW.

I also have a bunch of men starting at me all day on too of the noise triggering my migraines. What can I do?

Am I understanding utilization rate correctly? It’s chargeable time over total time? Charged 40 hours and had 10 hours non-charge so my utilization is 80%? If so, wouldn’t it benefit me to understate non-charge hours so my utilization is higher since they only really care about chargeable time anyways? Charge 40 hours still but only put 5 hours non-charge for utilization to be 89% instead of 80%? Or am I misunderstanding how utilization works?

Additional Posts in Big Law

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

How do you deal with a manager / junior partner who is always nitpicking and questioning why you did what you did, or telling you what you did is the wrong way to do things? It’s generally prefaced with them only doing this to help you grow, but has the exact opposite effect on me. And then when you try to explain your POV, you’re tagged as being defensive. Generally ends me with saying I’m sorry. No other partners at the firm have ever raised any concerns on my communications or work product.

In terms of a place to live, where in Manhattan can I find a place that's similar to River North in Chicago?

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?
