Does anyone else get weirded out by their firm trying to get everyone to do health/ biometric screenings at the office? I don’t know if I am just too much of a cynic but something in my gut just feels like it’s an attempt to get more med info that they wouldn’t otherwise have access to.

I'm pretty sure your firm is outsourcing this to another company subject to HIPAA. But hey maybe I'm wrong and your firm also has a medical lab division.

Hmmmm - my key card doesn't work on some doors in the office....

Lol, my firm isn’t nearly sophisticated enough to take that information and do anything with it. I wish. I mean my Outlook barely works and I’m supposed to think what, they’re going to take my health data and figure out how they can squeeze an extra 200 hours out of me?

likefunny

Man big law is wild. I wouldn’t have a second thought about participating in this.

like

To expand:

Biometric screenings and other preventative measures have great ROI for all involved. Simply put, overall healthcare costs are much lower when you detect and address issues early. Some of those savings accrue to insurers, others are passed down to you and your company via lower premiums (and a healthier life!) But many people are bad about doing them. So providers like to do them on premises to increase participation.

Many companies do this, it’s not a conspiracy, and there’s nothing nefarious about it.

Yeah I don’t trust this at all.

like

A lot of insurance companies give discounts if over certain percentage of employees do this. It’s like those car insurance companies that advertise discounts if you let them monitor your driving for a couple weeks. It’s probably just the firm trying to get better rates. I don’t like how insurance companies do this either, though. But I doubt your firm has reason to care about your health metrics.

like

I assume any health related activity pushed by a firm (health testing, steps challenge, etc) has to do reducing insurance costs to the firm. I don’t think it’s any nefarious intent by the firm. Personally I wouldn’t do it just because I don’t want the insurance company to have that information.

Is the concern here that if your numbers are good then they’ll know you aren’t working hard enough?

funnylike

What are they screening for?

like

The law firm/your employer doesn’t get any of this info. The insurance company sends out a contractor to run the screening. The law firm just hosts it to provide it as a convenience to its employees and those covered by its insurance policies, and maybe take advantage of rate incentives (lower rates benefit everyone if you have to contribute at all to your insurance premium). Almost every decent size company does this as well.
