I’ve been diagnosed w depression since i was in grad school and got off my antidepressant a few months ago bc it suppressed my appetite too much. I’ve been avoiding trying out on a new anti depressant but they make me drowsy for a 2-3 days but up to 1 full week. At one point i was considering getting back on because my focus was suffering, so I had a one on one with my manager to make him aware that I was going to be going to a series of doctors appointments (psychiatrist to balance the meds) and would drowsy and off for a few days while acclimating to the new medication. I also explained to him that I was having a hard time taking care of myself and keeping up with all my personal responsibilities (I am one of the only single people, living alone without spouse or children) and he basically encouraged me to take care of myself first and prioritize my wellbeing bc that is more important than this job. He told me the work will get done no matter what and there will always be more work (he alluded to me dying and the audits will continue anyway...). I also let him know that I was struggling with my sleep and it’s difficult for me to come in on time. He knows that mornings are tough for me, so sometimes, if I’m not needed at a client, I’ll work from home and give him a heads up that I’m moving a little slow that morning. I ended up not going to the psychiatrist (it’s hard to find a good fit!!) but in general I try to be there and be as reliable and structured as possible and it helps me do better to have a manager that understands that I’m doing my best.
I was on Wellbutrin. It helped a lot with focus and my life was much more together, but it also made me more even tempered but slightly numb to emotion and killed my appetite
Start with your employee resource program and then discuss with hr. Let them help you manage these discussions.
Second this, talk to HR first to figure out framing and what specifically you want accommodations for or help with.
I told my manager right away everything that happened to me. I was super scared, didn’t know what was going on with me. They were extremely supportive. I took 2 weeks off to figure out everything, went through multiple doctors and started therapy. It took me 5 months to recover.
