I work with a partner who constantly uses outdated white America-centric colloquialisms that I either need to google to understand what he’s trying to say (e.g., obscure equestrian or hunting references) and will frequently use sayings with racist origins. Things like “client will sell us down the river if we don’t...” I am a Black male and often want to call him out on these things. Perhaps it’s just ignorance and he’s not purposely trying to alienate POC. Am I being too sensitive?

OR circulating nurse here. Will preface this by saying I have the utmost respect for CSFAs in the OR setting. When and how do you push back on people senior to you? Fifth year dealing with supersenior associate (11th year) who completely lacks good judgment & common sense. One of those super smart but impractical types. As just one example, he recently called me to tell me to call someone who’s on vacation and ask them to send a calendar invite. I offered to send myself but apparently that wouldn’t work (presumably because it would be efficient & make sense.) At what point (and how) do I Just Say No?

I’ve always been the voice of reason and would speak up whenever I didn’t agree with something. However, I’ve reached a IDGAF attitude about everything at my current job and now just sit in these meetings not saying a thing. I think people are starting to sense the lack of interest. Whatever.

Working for a senior who is beyond horrible. She talks to you like you’re stupid and makes it sound like you’re absolutely terrible at what you’re doing. She’s made 5 other associates cry during her 5 year career. Got someone fired and made another person quit. It’s known around the office that she can no longer have a female associate, because she talks down to females more than she does males. I came along and thought I could deal with it but she literally makes me want to not log on tomorrow.

How do you deal with making mistakes at work? I’ve been doing good work lately but there’s one partner who thinks I’m mistake prone and I just made a mistake on something he asked me to do, but I corrected it quickly. However, there is public record of my mistake.

How do you handle a subordinate that goes around your decision making and goes higher up in the food chain?
